I built my last one a few months ago. Not sure if I'm savy, but I didn't fry anything... What's up?

I've done it a few times. What's the issue, tissue?

I've wanted to do it since 2001. Might be time to actually try it. How difficult was it to actually do? Is parts compatibility something that you really need to look out for, or is it pretty obvious?

nothing crazy like a gaming computer. Being able to handle Minecraft for the boys would be sufficient.

Http://www.Pcpartpicker.com can help a bunch. It allows building of setups. It has some validation on compatible components and power usage. Good stuff

Good lord, it's a nightmare. Fun, but I hope money ain't a factor. What's the mission of the system? Gaming or compiling code?

Best advice I can give is pick the best motherboard/processor you can get and build up around that.

Was gonna suggest pcpartpicker as well. Best thing also is to tell us your budget and goals for build: Ofiice works, internet, gaming, editing, processing, photos... and we can make some suggestions.

Hell's bells, that's easy. Get a i7/motherboard combo, toss a decent video card on it (but not a beast), expandable RAM, SSD and maybe another hard drive as expansion storage, and they've got systems that can grow with them.

If it's just for gaming, have you considered a PS4? Mine craft runs well on it but the mod support is limited.

Easy. I used to build em in college and built one for the family that we still use. I put together a nice one for most of the gaming I do (wow, heroes, d3) and it cost about $500 all-in.

Hahaha. Hey I'm a gamer regardless of platform. My PC is strong like bull but I game mostly on the PS4 since it was cheaper to get 2 of those vs 2 pcs

Are SSDs at a price point now that makes them affordable in budget machines? ($500-$600)

No heavy gaming, and probably nothing other than minecraft. Kids already have a PS3, XBox360, a Wii, and devices. They're braidead enough. General use machine when iPads and iPhones aren't cutting it.

    Where do I start? Frys?

And I haven't been a fan of Windows since 98. What do folks on PCs use for an O/S these days?

Is your budget 500-600 and you already have a monitor or you would also need that?

Ha, money isn't prevalent enough in life for me too:oops:

Frys is good. I built mine from Newegg 7 years ago (and it's still going strong). If you're thinking bargain, a 1TB green WD drive is still cheap and reliable. And there are motherboard/processor combos that have integrated graphics that will play minecraft beautifully while still permitting wikipedia searches for that book report they didn't do.

Windows 10 is fine, and it's got a lot of security features you can use for restricting Internet access by web site content. Just get rid of Edge and install a more stable (and less infectable) browser.

I can get a monitor, mouse, and keyboard from work. So all I really need is CPU.
