bottom line is sales indicate that consumers prefer 3rd GEN over all others even considering the issues it has and the the sales will increase thru the years once they are Ironed out completely, the investment in resale value will be far above the competition because Toyota Corp ,not Toyota Stealerships(not all) want happy customers and re turn buyers. Purchasing a Toyota truck of any year is a great investment, I see more GEN1 and Hi Lux trucks still on the road than I see any Domestic or Foreign made truck in the same class and generally the year of manufactor.

Product failure isn't linear with respect to time, despite that it might seem intuitive to think so. Graphs for product reliability/failure are generally represented in a graph of issues vs time as a "bath tub" a high number of failures initially, followed by decline, which leads to a relatively flat period, and finally an increase at the end of the life-cycle. A quick search will support this with all the examples you need.

The site I linked indicates that the the peak years for recalls, which is one indicator of overall quality, and it shows that recalls are in decline starting in 2011. The 2016/2017 data has less time-in-service, but 2011-2015 data can hardly be denied as being statistically significant and it shows improvement.

So my question still stands - can some provide data that shows overall reliability is in decline?

I do what I can. Things can get way too damn serious around here sometimes. A little humor and boobage here and there never hurt anyone....or so I thought.

As I stare 50 in the face I've grown infinitely wiser in all those years with nearly 5 decades of irreplaceable life experience behind me....and still learning. But actual maturing is over rated. Boobs are still awesome and farts are still funny as shit.

While I agree that most new product failures occur in tbe first year of service, I can say I own a 2010 from brand new and all my official recalls were in the last 4 years, not the first 3 years.

I think recalls and reliability are not exactly the same thing.

    Build date and location please?

Hey if your taco can do it, your rental should be able to. Unless they are paying the payment on the taco.

As many said, not the way things work, but I bet yota goes after some one over this.

I agree, which is why I noted that it was only one indicator of overall quality. I also didn't mean to suggest it was the first year of service, I meant early in the life-cycle of the product. If a product is designed to last 10-15years, then it would be reasonable to expect a higher number of failures over the first several years.

I also do not dispute your first-hand experiences, but you incorrect with respect to recalls for your vehicles: to-date there have been 13 official recalls. There were as many in the first year, 2010, as there were in 2014 and there has only been one after that (in 2016).

    https://www.cars.com/recalls/toyota-tacoma-2010/

To be clear, I not looking for an argument (nor do I think you are), but I would be interested in seeing some data that supports the often repepated claim that reliability is decreasing. So far no one has been able to provide it, so it appears that it may simply be opinion based on personal bias and not in actual fact true.

This is pretty standard for many companies. They negotiate a price point per unit based on many factors. Many suppliers will have different price points based on failure rates, the lower the failure rate the higher the price point is. Meaning the supplier checks every unit, every 5, every 25 etc. The big OEM'S are always trying to squeeze the price per unit down from suppliers. This usually results in the suppliers cutting corners and giving them a poorer quality part. We have already seen this with the CPS sensors, now the rear ends. And I bet their may be a CPS sensor recall in the next year or so, or at least a service campaign.

    I have had it

Toyota needs to take care of us folks that have problems with rear end seepage!

If Toyota won't straight trade my '16 Tacoma TRD 4x4 0ff Road for a new '17 Yaris, the Nissan dealer said they would give me a great trade in on a new Versa S. I may try to get one of those fancy CVT transmissions so I never have gear issues.

Also free oil changes for life!

So guys, no worries we are covered by the nice folks over at Nissan.

Problem with these ISO 9001 standards is that they are all bogus. Sure there are procedures and documentation that defines quality and standards. But the weakest link are the humans that sign off on everything. When he ISO Regulators do inspections and quality assurance audits, the companies are notified ahead of time. Then they get all their ducks in a row so they pass the audit with flying colors.

ISO 9001 was created buy the European Bureaucracy and forced on the industry. It looks great on paper, but money and greed get in the way and don't really make a whole hell of a lot of difference. Look at past fiasco's like the GM switch fiasco. The VW Diesel fiasco. Again these companies have high end ISO certifications for quality, but that didn't mean a whole lot did it.

ISO 9001 is the number of beers guzzled by a team of drunk Germans in creating a useless process standard.

Glad to be able show off my Six-Sigma yellow belt knowledge.
