    I had a paperback years ago (maybe 30 IIRC) called Don't Get Taken Every Time (found it, it's in its sixth edition). The author is a--I am sure by now retired--auto sales professional and he provides remarkable insight into how selling cars works. His description of the three types of buyers, listed in descending order of desirability (if you are a car salesman) has stuck with me.

    It is:
    1. The "I don't care about anything but the trade-in value." buyer. The dealer can claim some insanely high "list" price, tack on all sorts of other crap, and write a silly meaningless trade-in amount on the purchase and sale agreement;

    2. The "I don't care about anything but the monthly payment." buyer: As with the "trade-in is all that matters" buyer the dealer has pretty much a carte blanche and can make the financed value a scary number; but finance it for some ridiculous number of years to make the sale;

    3. The "I care about nothing but the out-the-door bottom line", ready to walk away cash buyer;
    1. and 2. are kind of a toss up, but 3. is the stuff car salesman's nightmares are made of...

    I fell for the trap I guess. I just wanted low payments and low interest rate. My frontier was not worth much I had over 150k miles on it and it was over 10 years old also it had been in a couple of fender bender crashes. All you hear about is how reliable toyota is and the resale value of Tacoma is so great. My sport has all the bells and whistles I think I paid just under sticker price for it but they did not give me much for my trade at all

    You know after taxes and fees the trade barely even made up for it. Anyways it is water under the bridge I am not here to cry about spilled milk on the deal so much as I am just upset with all of the problems the truck has had. When it is a new vehicle and you spend so much money there are some high expectations I guess. Maybe I just expected too much.

    Wow that is really not a confidence builder. So I do not think the 2018 would be much different. Do they even know what the options will be on the 2018 or will it be the same truck? I really wish these had better power or better acceleration. Maybe they will improve the transmission or motor to get better tuning.:confused:

    At this point it kinda doesn't matter. You're pretty far underwater as far as the truck goes and if you trade you'll take a serious bath. Do you really want to pay someone (dealer) to take your truck in trade? Or worse, roll that debt into a new loan? That's a vicious cycle that is VERY hard to get out of.

    Just stay the course, mind the warranty, and take it one day at a time. It's a great truck, don't let the "overreaction" crowd get to you.

    I agree it would cost too much but others mentioned I should get rid of the truck. I do not think this truck has been so great as it has given me a lot of problems so there I would have to disagree with you. How can it be great to have to get the truck towed and now have a leaking rear end? This is not great man

    Not sure.

    But, it was largely unchanged outside of technology modernization (kinda) and aesthetics from 2005-2015, and the first gen trucks was mostly the same story. I would assume based on that, the current model isn't having any major changes for many years.

    Armchair quarterbacks that don't pay your bills will ALWAYS scream "get rid of it! Your life is in danger!" So there's a recall. You take it in, get it fixed, and move on with your life.

    Until they pay your bills I'd take what they say with a grain of salt (or five)

    My wife and I have owned Toyotas for over 30 years:

    '83 Corona (said 153k but the speedo cable was broken for the 4 years we owned it);
    '85 Corolla (last of the RWD, 295k miles when traded in on the '94 Corolla Wagon below);
    '89 Celica Supra (410k when traded on the '98 RAV4 below) ;
    '91 Cressida (235k when given to my brother);
    '94 Corolla Wagon (just 120k when sold--I bought and supercharged a 1990 MIata)
    '98 RAV4 (293k when sold);
    '03 Highlander (current, 212k miles);
    '09 Tacoma (current, 138k miles);

    I have found over that time that Toyota's quality peaked in the mid 80s through the mid/later 90s. The '83 Corona ran and ran, but it did not look too hot as it aged. The '85 Corolla ran and looked so good (inside) that I had it painted in '93 (paid $800) so she could drive it some more without me hearing about it. The '89 Celica was a damned nice high quality ride.

    The '91 Cressida was unparalleled in speed, handling, ride, quality and any other measure one could name--it had the same engine and tranny as the '91 Supras. The '94 Corolla Wagon was nice

    The '03 HIghlander does not have the same overall highest, finest kind quality as the others (save the Corona)--it runs and runs and runs but has annoyances like the mickey-mouse printed circuit board bayonet mount (like an instrument cluster) tail lights that have sufferd vibration damage and been replaced twice now.

    The '09 Tacoma seems well made however it is not of the mid-80s/90s quality--the good news is it seems to be little things (like the flimsy panel under the steering wheel). I do like it though, at 138k miles it is mostly like new in and out...

    Nahhhh Smitty wouldn't DARE mention the possibility of trading his truck. He likes to wallow in misery! 2 more days left for his ban? (It was 3 days, yes?)
