I built one with the help of my retired woodworking ninja neighbor when I first got my truck. It's been great, I'm happy with how it turned out. IMG_0411.jpg IMG_0405.jpg IMG_0411.jpg IMG_0405.jpg IMG_0409.jpg IMG_0498.jpg

I used the technique on the right for the outside corners. Just line up a straight edge along the plywood and make those 90 degree cuts. Then I used a carpenter's square for the 45 degree cut, measuring out 5/8" from the corner.

OK, my first post in a very long time so...I decided to build a platform that was made with the KISS design, Keep It Simple Stupid. I wanted no carpet, gets dirty quick offroad, had to utilize my limited tools, belt sander is best, and be simple to take down and use just 1 sheet of plywood. This oak holds me at 170lbs and my wife at 115 no problem. If you like, get a 6in dia. PVC water pipe and cut to height of plywood for support only when you need it(sleeping) and can be moved for maximum storage when traveling.
So here is the build list.. ALL wood used is 3/4 in. thickness
1- 10 ft x 7 1/4in. oak board (cut to 57 and 57 3/16 in.) for cross pieces ((bed is not true!!))
2- 6 ft x 5in.birch side rails cut lengthwise to 4 1/4in. (+/- 1/8 )width. Table saw or circ saw guide a must!! (carved w/dremmel or beltsander to match side curves)
1- sheet of oak plywood (Lowe's...actual width is 48.5 in;))
4- 1/4in. shims under cross pieces
4- 3/8ths carriage bolts with pointed wood saversimages_0fdd6822461d9f35c41f883f89fce6f359affec7.jpg
    washers and wing nuts
Cut plywood at Lowes to 73 1/4 in.
Carve side rails to fit curve near tail lights and bed edges with belt sander
Build up cross pieces with shims (glue & screw) to go flush with top of cutouts and wheel wells..check with side rails
Drill larger that 3/8ths holes for frame allow a little slop, install bolts loosely.
Fit check plywood and using belt sander, fit the SIDERAILS to the plywood since the bed is not true, that's why I used Birch (softer) so I could sand it to fit. BED WAS 1/4in. Different front to back!
Wax plywood sides to slide easier
Plywood length is not touching tailgate, left enough gap to fill with water pipe insulation or other I used a 1 1/4 in tygone tube split as an edge protector and gap filler. IMAG1592.jpg IMAG1585.jpg IMAG1589.jpg IMAG1574.jpg IMAG1576.jpg IMAG1581.jpg

yes, I have done the mods
Great build. I want to do this same thing with a tall platform at the bed rails and an extended height cap - how is it sleeping in, climbing in and out and moving around in?

I've lurked through here before. Real cool designs. I'm too tall to sleep with a platform though. Maybe one day though

It's perfect for what it is. It's a place to sleep, nap, read, ride out a storm. It's not to hang out in.. that's what being outdoors is for. When I take the truck out it is to be outdoors, surfing, hiking, spending time around the fire, etc. It's plenty of room to do what it is intended for. It's not claustrophobic for me, and I'm not a huge fan of being in small spaces, and I can move around and spread out. I love it!

So here is my primitive build. Plan on using it during times where I rent my house out for football games, graduation, any other Penn State occasion. My main goal during the construction was to make it as quick and easy to tear down as possible, and to keep costs relatively low. Here's what I've got so far, it's a work in progress. Basically just ran 2 2x6's across the notches in the sides of the bed. I notched the boards so that they would sit flush with the top of the wheel wells. I then ran 2 pieces of plywood (5/16??? i think ) across the top for the platform. I then picked up a 4'6"x6' rug from walmart for around 18 dollars and it fits darn near perfect. As far as "drawer slides", I picked up 2 rolling sterilite plastic containers (1 short 1 long) from walmart for around 30 bucks. They fit perfectly under the platform, and are darn near the exact right length when placed one in front of the other. In order to make sure I don't have to crawl under the platform to fish the back container out, I drilled a hole in the bin, and put a rope through so that I can easily pull the container out. Overall, i'm very happy with how things have gone thus far. It has been very cost effective minus the awning which I had to purchase new. There are several other projects I'd like to do coming up here, but I'll be giving it a test run this weekend while my house is rented for PSU gradution.

I built my drawer platform thing recently. 6' bed, but I left the front bit open to keep my spare and fuel, however, I also have a piece I can put there to make it one large platform if I want. Drawers slide on skateboard bearings and 1" square tube. I didn't want the sides over the wheel wells because I like using that space for taller stuff. the drawers pull out about 4'.

I have since moved my traction boards to my roof rack, and added at the helm bed gussets, and have turn buckles holding the drawer system (though it has never moved).

Anyone made a storage platform that is waterproof? I'm thinking of making a platform with storage drawers, that I can use for camping with my bestop up, but can use for storage when the bestop is down. Just worried about the contents getting wet with the top down.

How did you attach the beams going width wise in the bed? It's like everyone is attaching them to some magical notch.
