I have a 2015 Tacoma..off road version...with 20K miles..mostly from daily driver, but some (25%) or so on fire roads, easy trail stuff. I am expecting a bed mount tire carrier from Avid next week and today dropped the original spare..

It was very tightly secured and required some force to break it loose

once it was down and pulled out from under the truck I noticed a fair amount of wear on the sidewall which was face up in two spots....

it lines up with the 2 stops the tire is pulled up to when in its normal postion

if you have more miles then I do on the truck you may want to drop the spare and check its condition

    Fairly well known issue.

Glad you didn't find out when you needed it.

Thanks for the post. I did not know about this. Fortunately I havent needed my spare (knock on wood) in the 80k miles I've had the truck. Going to check it out tomorrow.

I'm surprised you're getting "wear" versus just the sidewall rubber getting compressed/leaving marks.

I pull mine down a couple times a year to check pressure and occasionally grease the cable and winch. No wear on the spare.

I dropped my spare today to check the air pressure (quite low--12 psi), it was also obvious that is has most likely never been out since the truck was new.

It's a Bridgestone Dueler H/T so I'm sure it is the original spare (I have the paperwork for the OEM tires), I did notice what some might call "damage" from it's being snugged up against the positioning brackets; nothing scary just some deformation in the sidewall. Not sure I'd want to go 100 mph for 100 miles on it but it will be fine as a spare.

I also re-hung it "upside down" so that the valve stem is accessible, I'd hate to need it ad find it with just 12 psi.

The spare does not have a TPMS sensor, I was pretty sure of this going in as TechStream had listed just four...
