It does seem odd. Is this truck OBDII?

Yep it has, and I just learned a new term. Going to have a mechanic friend hook it up this afternoon and see what codes it sends. Before the head change I would have to change #3 plug about every 6 weeks. (the head was cracked between #3 and 4 cyl) The symptoms at that time: would start and blubber for 10 seconds or so then run okay.

One more fix and I think I'm there. With a new coil it now runs good at idle and top end. It does have a miss at lower rpms and in a pulling situation such as going up hills. If I get the rpms up it may miss but only occasionally. Have replaced plugs (ngk), plug wires (import direct), the distributor cap looks good, and checked the pick-up coil. Injectors seem to be doing their job. Any ideas? Ready for this summer project to be over.

I would suggest double checking your plug connections to sure they are tight. Were you throwing a code?

Again thanks for your help my friend. I am having it scanned this afternoon and hopefully find which cylinder or (s) is effected and get codes. The old set of plug wires were fire dancing in the dark so I replaced them and thought sure the problem would be gone. Nope. I have checked connections several times and inspected the cap over and over again. I will inform after getting the results. Thanks again!!

Yea, I'd like to know more about the replacement coil as well. What brand, and what led you to replace it. Was there a noticeable crack or did if fail the resistance check?

It is a great day team! I hope I can answer the last few threads in this post. After the question arose about what kind of coil I had installed which was (Master Pro), I got to thinking. The coil had fixed most of my problem but still had a slight miss. Luckily I had purchased the coil through a mechanic friend so O' Reilly's took it back and we replaced it with a (Import Direct) coil. Bingo!!!!! If I hadn't have changed out all the other parts mentioned in this post I would have started the circle all over again. The original coil did check correctly early on when this repair started, but sure do wish I would have taken it off and inspected in the beginning. It had a horizontal crack with a carbon burn. Purring like a kitten now and so far the head is holding up. Yep it is a happy day for Music Yota! Now I need to replace some leaf springs if ya'll have any input. Again thanks to all of you for your help!!! True

Thanx for posting the final fix. I'm glad I don't have to deal with distributors any more :D .

My last such vehicle was a '91 civic HB, which completely died on me one day, and had to be towed back home.
After some trouble-shooting, I replaced the entire distributor with one from a wrecker, that fixed it.

Glad you got it fixed as well! I was looking to replace my leaf springs at one point. I was going to go with general HDs because I mainly use my truck for hauling crap. I ended up doing a "quick fix" and going with the 3 leaf AAL from headstrong offroad since my leafs werent really frowning yet and holding up ok. I'm really happy with them though, and its a hell of a deal, the kit come with new u-bolts and everything. I kept my rear overload leaf in and got about 2.5'' out of it. Definitely a stiffer ride, but the bed barely sags when loaded up with mulch now.

I'm glad you fixed it and let us know the solution.

I follow Corolla forums more than this forum, and the higher mileage 93-97 Corollas have problems with the distributor/coil fairly frequently. (Tacomas and other models from this time period use the same coil.) The symptoms can be different for different cars: bad idle, misfire/hesitation at higher RPMs or under load, misfire after the engine gets hot, hard-start, no-start, etc.

The consensus seems to be that a junkyard Toyota distributor is the best bet. The quality of aftermarket distributors and coils is lower and can produce a weak spark. And people will say it can't be the distributor/coil because it's brand new.

Picking brains. Okay, after re-ferb head, and new head gasket I have put around 11k on. All going well but witnessing a little loss of coolant in reservoir. It will drop about an inch @ 3k miles. Running great! Cannot find leaks any where in the system, no anti-freeze smell, or white smoke. Possible water pump leak? Any thoughts?

When I picked up my Taco the radiator was like half a gallon low. Filled and watched closely over next few weeks. Kept consuming coolant. Eventually over those few weeks a hairline split on plastic upper radiator tank got bad enough that I was barely able to see some moisture collecting. Ordered the Denso from Amazon and swapped it in and no more consumption.
I also had an oil sample tested or analyzed, for piece of mind and it came back showing no signs of coolant mixing with oil. Test usually runs around 20 bucks, Blackstone Labs has a mail in sample setup. I have a local lab a couple minutes away.
