I love how these "match" other OE trim, such as roof racks.

I do have factory flaps , don't leave home without em ! And I have noticed at the carwash that the mount for the bars are caked in mud , I don't know that the mud would find its way on to the side of the truck or not without them .

I honestly never considered the protection they may or may not provide from " sandblast " Good description .

I will take a harder look at how well they do in keeping truck cleaner . Maybe they could be pushed in or adjusted in closer to the body and I could keep my pants leg off them . LOL

I also am looking for something for my own truck but I prefer nerf if you wish tube bars. The thing that I dont like is on the 2016-2017 Tacoma's is you must mount them to the rocker panel not the frame which is not strong. I have seen some oval tubes that look good almost a runner. Look at some of the better known makers like Westin and others and maybe you can get a lifetime warranty. Prices are all over the place. If you do get some runners get some with the most brackets as possible for strength. But remember even with that the more brackets they wont hold up to alot of abuse. I'm still looking.

Just do like a guy above and put your right foot on the board and "scooch" outward a little then step down... a little effort and it's a habit... no more messed up pants...

I would not shorten the mounts as you will lose protection...:canada::thumbsup:

I also went with the 2nd Gen Plastic Running boards. They fit like a glove and match really well. I hate the look of aftermarket parts, and even though they were made for the previous generation these look like they belong on the truck. I bought mine new for under 300 on ebay or Amazon...i forget. They were take-offs from a 2nd Gen that a dealer was liquidating. They definitely offer paint protection. I use tire gel when I detail the truck and before putting these on black specks would sling all over my doors and especially in front of the rear fender flare, even after installing mudflaps. With these on virtually nothing hits the paint of the truck. I also didn't like that I could see the 'rough' body seam under the doors. It really stood out to me because my truck is white. The boards look clean and keep the truck clean (without sacrificing much - if any - height). Win win (win).

I had running boards and they just got in the way! Too high to use as a step and would scrape back of leg every time I got out of truck, I ended up removing them and sold them. I'm also 6'4'' , so they may work for someone vertically challenged.

They're solid aluminum with a textured finish, they bolt to the normal running board / nerf bar body mounts so don't think of them as rock rails.

I've been very happy with them. I also live in the south so I have no concerns with salt corrosion. I'd consider something else if I still lived where rock salt was used on a regular basis.

My 2c. I had OEM running boards but replaced them with sliders. Both were about the same height though so it was a bit strange for me to use them as a step (ie when I step on them I'm almost stepping the same height as I would be just straight into the truck - I'm 5' 11").

IMO something like this would be best if you're using them for steps.

Edit: not my truck, just found this on Google

No way on the "steps"...Steps are for kids...!! go with the "boards"...OEM, of course....

    Here's mine..Love 'em...

PS.. I'm 5-11" as well... just don't use or need them as "steps"..They are great paint protection with the OEM flaps..!

What model running board is this? 2nd Gen or 3rd Gen?
    Looks good.
I'm looking for something to protect my kick panels paint.
They are getting chips from driving on dirt roads

I'm a Toyota salesperson and I ordered the same board for my Tacoma. That second generation board IMHO is the best board Toyota makes. It's heavy duty, doesn't flex, doesn't rust, inexpensive, protects the underbody and it fits the 3rd generation like a glove.

I just ordered the PT212-35055. Looking forward to getting them today. I did a lot of searching before deciding on these. Fit and protection were my main goals. These checked off both needs.

I also have the 2nd gen oem running boards. I like that they match the pattern on the bed caps. I would really like if they were cast aluminum like the 3rd gen running boards, but they are very sturdy. I got mine for less than 200 on craigslist.

Mostly I have my running boards for chip and door ding prevention; I like to keep my stuff in good condition and these add some peace of mind from dumbasses.

At 5'9" I step up on them and sit down into the truck. Basically the same way I did with my Wrangler in years past.

How far do they stick out from the truck? I have the nerf bars and HATE them, they are just in the way. They look good but I am planning on getting wheels and tires and want a black running board instead of the chrome nerf bars. BUT I want something that does not stick out so far that you have to scoot out of the truck. I wear a uniform and it sucks on rainy days because I usually get my pants dirty, but I like the look and paint protection.

Yeah, I hear you regarding door protection. That was why I initially got the OEM boards, but then I bent one on a trail a few weeks after owning the truck, so I went for bolt on sliders instead.
