Hey there, new Tacoma owner here. I recently picked up a 2003 Tacoma. At one point I would've considered myself a "Ford guy" (my brother is a Ford engineer, ha), but my last vehicle, a '98 4runner, pretty much sold me on Toyota trucks for life. I ran that thing up to 273K and it never left me stranded once before the rocker panel rust spread into the body mounts and I started feeling not so great about hitting the highway with all the crazy drivers here. Road salt here is a bitch.
Anyways, I knew I wanted another 3rd gen or older 4runner... Was looking at doing a fly-and-drive thing to avoid rust, but then this Tacoma popped up locally. AZ-titled truck, floorboards you could eat off of. One catch, it's a PreRunner. Ah well. Considering most of my off-roading consists of upper-peninsula logging road-running, some of which I've done in a Crown Vic :headbang:, I think I'll be ok. Can't be worse than my old '89 long bed 2WD F150 in snow. I've got a set of studded Firestone Winterforces from my 'Runner that'll get me through whatever snow we get here until I make a move out west and/or acquisition the parts for a 4X4 swap. I'm honestly more concerned about keeping the damn road salt away from my baby, so if anyone has any suggestions regarding undercoating or other preventative measures, I'm all ears. She has 200K and some change on the clock, but man, this truck lives up to the standard set by my beloved 4runner - everything right down to the headlight switch still feels tight, and that 5VZ-FE up front sounds like she's just breaking in. Looking forward to some fun adventures with this one. TRD suspension package, everything stock except for the plasti-dipped grille and emblems, the "TOYOTA" tailgate decal, which I actually dig, and the older 15" wheels. I scored a set of the 4-spoke 15" Toyota pickup/4runner alloys cheap and will probably swap those out and use the steelies for my snows, but for now I actually dig the look of the steelies.
