Sub Wiring Advice

Long time lurker,first time poster. Been reading for over 3 weeks thru all the threads about audio upgrades. Ordered everything I needed and ready to install. The only thing I am real unsure about is the wiring of my subs.


The amp I will be using does 800w@2 ohms, the 2 10's combined will take 600w@2 ohms. For starters they will be in a pre-fab box until my wallet recovers enough to have Mr Marv build me his magic.


My question is on a pre-fab box, subs on opposite ends, how are people wiring this configuration for 2 ohms? Do I use the box connectors to do the wiring or is there some trick people use that I am clueless about? Thanks in advance for anyone willing to drop knowledge. Maybe drill the box from the back and do all wiring there?

Connectors make it way easier to install and remove. Installation usually takes a few iterations (mockups) before you get to a final.

 

No trick here, but if you have two 2 ohm single coil subs, you won't have a 2 ohm final load. You're either going to have a 1 ohm or 4 ohm load. If your amp is stable at 1 ohm, you're golden. If not, and most are not, you're stuck with 4 ohms and underpowered subs. In this case you might be better off just using one - depending on the sub and alignment of course. Which subs? Which amp? How big is the prefab? Sealed or ported?

To use all that power - twice RMS rating (600 per sub), wire the subs in parallel. To come in just under rated power at 250W wire them in series. There are tutorials and even calculators all over the web to walk you through that part. It's super easy.

 

I want to see this one. Have you got it installed yet?

 

Sadly all I have so far is the headunit in, sound deadening done and wire prerun. Speaker adapters actually came in today as did the hdmi/usb extension from crutchfield that I will replace the usb/aux with. Soooooo................hopefully everything gets put in and somewhat tuned this weekend.

 

If your just started out, you want to always match the amp max Rms output load to the sub's rms input. And the impedance of the sub load should match the max ( or minimum I guess) impedance of the amp. That way the subs are getting all the power they should be getting, and the amp is putting out all the power it's capable of putting out ( and your getting all the power you paid for). You can go about 10% over the subs rms rating without risking damage during prolonged use... anything above that, the sub may fail as it's Running higher temperature than what it was designed for.

 

The only issue I would have with that is any upgrade would require replacing both amp's and sub's instead of the sub's. Economically I prefer to just do future upgrades on the weak links until they make something else the weak link, then start there. I actually like the idea that the amp will push 1200 but the subs will only handle 300. Makes the amp run cooler and increases longevity. I do get what you are saying tho about optimization for a one and done set up. Sadly I dont think that is where mine will end up in the end. Plus almost everything was on a clearance markdown, so I couldnt pass the components up for the time being.

 

Did you ever finish this project? I'm looking to wire my 2 dvc 10 inch 2 ohm subs in series/parallel and am wondering how others have done it with the tacoma rear wall box.

 

Actually installing everything tomorrow. Life threw a couple curveballs to deal with but my go date is tomorrow. Will post pics and first impressions later in the evening.
