LED Wiring Help

Yeah it is a rigid wire harness for a pair of pods... so just adding a relay should do the trick?

 

The relay is more for handling the current that the switch can't. Even the led pods are fairly low current but it's just enough to be right at or over the switch capacity, depending on which ones you went with.

The first question is when and how do you want to operate these lights? The stock (RI) switch can turn on the lights at anytime regardless of the truck being on or off.

 

Rigid harness wires
Solid red - fused battery power feed connection (input)
Red with black strip - positive wire for led pods (output)
Black(2) - negitive wire for led pods and negitive battery connection

 

What stock (RI) switch? I'm gonna be using them when off road and driving in the mountains on dirt roads

 

I was referring to the stock switch that comes with the rigid harness. The red round rocker.

I guess I should have asked if you wanted the switch to be able to be turned on when the truck was completely off or have it shut off when the truck is off. Avoids being accidently left on and some prefer that option.

 

Yeah either works for me really, I would use the stock rigid one but I don't wanna drill a hole in my 2016 Tacoma quite yet

 

Rigid harness wires
Solid red - fused battery power feed connection (input)
Red with black strip - positive wire for led pods (output)
Black(2) - negitive wire for led pods and negitive battery connection

 

Rigid harness connection to relay
Solid red wire to pin 30
Red w/black strip to pin 87a
Black wires to pin 85

Switch connections
Red 1 wire to pin 86 on relay
Green wire to a fused input - switched or constant (your choice)
Red 2 wire to/using add a circuit to "tail" fuse or leave unconnected
Black wire to chassis ground

Okay this is my last question and I will have this figured out, so the green wire from the switch, you said to connect it to a fused input, switched or constant your choice. What do you mean? Like do I run that green wire back to the relay or connect it somewhere else?

 

Somewhere else. Fused simply means that you have a fuse inline before the switch. Switched means it only has power when the ignition or accessory is on. Constant means it has power all the time.

 

the green wire should be attached to a fused source more for safety reasons than anything else i.e. electrical shorts = fire. Since the rigid harness is now connected to the relay, instead of a direct connection to the switch. You will need to provide the 12+ power feed to activate the relay via the switch.

You can accomplish this by either running the green wire back down to the relay and splicing it into the battery wire on pin 30 (constant power).
or
run the green wire to a wire that is powered when the truck is on. Cigarette light/power port tends to be a good option. an add a circuit to cig fuse (unsure of actual fuse name) or a direct splice can work here.
