I have a 07 access prerunner v6 sr5 trd sport that I love and has been great so far.
Was thinking of getting a dclb 4x4 with same trim and all.
I am now thinking of getting a jeep as a second car, primarily for wheeling. I understand they come stock with many things I would need to pay a good bit to make the tacoma equal.
One particular thing I love about wheeling/camping trips with my tacoma is having a bed to throw all the gear into and having a truck box for tools

Who has had both and would take one over the other for wheeling trips?

@chris4x4 posted here some great points on the rubicons

Purely for wheeling, Jeep hands down. I've had a Wrangler Rubicon and many Toyota trucks. The Jeep is better in nearly every off road catagory; approach angle, breakover angle, departure angle, water fording, turning radius, solid front axle, rear coil suspension, lower Tcase gearing, it is purpose built for off road. And the Rubicon adds front and rear lockers, push button detachable swaybar, lower axle gearing and more. Almost all other "off road edition" vehicles are just on road platforms that have some off road parts or features added. Plus taking the top and doors off off road is great. Hauling camping gear was never an issue, but in a 2 door model expect to have to remove the rear seat to do so.

That said, I drive a Tacoma because it is a far better multipurpose vehicle. With 4 doors it is still a good family hauler, it still does well off road, but I won't take it on many of the trails I used to take my Jeep on. It is better on the highway. It can haul stuff, which is the Jeeps largest shortcoming. Whether it is mulch, plywood or furniture, cargo is not Jeeps strong point and as a home owner that is something I require.

If it's a trail rig 80-90% of the time, jeep all day. However, most rigs we have to live with on a day to day basis, so I voted tacoma. Way better livability. Comfort and reliability will also be better (maybe not 3rd gen lol)

Is it just you, or wifey and kidlets? Too many variables, but as stated above....jeep is a purpose built truck that serves a niche market (even though the soccer moms love them for some unknown reason) while the Tacoma serves a more multi use market. The Tacoma would take $20k to become remotely as capable. Lockers, 33s or 35s, regear, high approach angle bumpers, crawl box, mid travel suspension. And you still have ifs to deal with.

Buy whichever feels like you will be using it for its purpose. hope this helps.
