First off I bought a 2000 excab SR5 Tacoma with the 3.4 4x2 auto with dif lock and I love it. The bad is the trans started slipping so after some research determined I needed a new A340E transmission so I got one out of a 2000 totaled tacoma. After getting the newer trans and climbing under the truck the original trans has a shorter (by about 3 inches) tail shaft/output shaft and the newer trans out of an identical truck minus the SR5 has a much longer tail shaft. I have found quite a few other A340E trans that look identical to the one in my truck with the shorter shaft but they all say will fit 01-03 tacoma with either the 2.4 or 4.0 motors. I have found a few 1999-2000 A340F that look like mine but they are all 4x4 . Im not sure it the newer model A340E will fit or if the gear placement is the same in A340E and A340F for my truck. Can someone please help point me in the right direction to get my Taco back on the road without having to swap a lot of things around. Im pretty good at turning wrenches but do not have a clue what to do as far as tearing down an auto trans and swapping the output shaft.

1st gens didn't come with a 4.0. I believe the 4WD transmissions are shorter than its 2WD counterpart.

dscn6048.jpg this is the trans currently in my truck that is bad (2000 SR5 excab 4x2 auto, 3.4 v-6) dscn6066.jpg and this is what everyone is telling me the trans should be by running my vin#. I found a factory reman trans identical to pic 1 but the guy doesnt wanna sell it to me because he said thats not the correct trans in the truck. I have another trans identical to pic 2 that came out of a truck just like mine (except it isnt a prerunner) and thats when we noticed the tail shaft difference once we got under my truck to remove the bad trans. I would love to find another trans that will direct replace the currently installed transmission (pic 1). Ive priced a rebuild but dont have the $1900 (priced with me removing and reinstalling the trans) to drop on the trans. Sending it off is out as well as the cheapest freight cost ive been quoted is around $400. I hate to sound cheap or complicated but I just bought this truck as a daily and it didnt last 2 weeks before the trans went to hell.

Only 2 weeks ? did you purchase private or from a car salesman ? There are laws protecting you from getting scammed in the fine print .I believe you have 30 days to file a dispute .

Back to the transmission . It looks the same other than the extension housing and tail shaft . What are the chances of finding the driveshaft to make that trans work ?
Cant see the other side of the trans from the picture , but you have to make sure both transmissions are either cable controlled throttle or electronic throttle control .

Unfortunately I bought it as is from a private seller but after some reading it seems the 4runner has a 1 piece driveshaft thats lighter and shorter than my 2 piece so im heading to a junk yard in about 15 mins to measure it. I wish the truck i got the donor trans from had a good drive shaft but it was trashed in the side impact when hit. Fingers crossed i find a driveshaft that will work (at least a couple of months) until i can get my orig trans rebuilt. Im new to the whole Tacoma (Toyota scene period) scene but i have a good friend of mine thats in to all the toyota swap stuff after building his supercharged 4runner and all the 1uz and 2jz swaps he has done. Hebis currently doing a 6 speed man trans swap in his lexus to get the auto tranny away from his 2jz so hopefully with the input from here and with what he knows ill have my Taco back up and buring fuel by the weekend

I actually found the exact same trans as the one in my truck at a buddies salvage yard and got a damn steal on it. I got the trans, another motor (from same wrecked truck) with only 74,000 miles on both, door panels, both bucket seats and center console for $900. I dont need the motor BUT mine has 306xxx miles and didnt think it would hurt to buy a 74k motor to swap this fall when im bored. I dont have pics yet but there will be plenty to come as i build my first tacoma.
