I live in southern west Virginia right on the eastern ky border and Lord knows in the winter they kill us with the salt other than some slight surface rust and some slight rust on the welds my frame is clean, I'm wanting to prevent it I don't wanna dish out the $$$ for the por15 so has anyone tried rustoleum on their frames ?

Rumor has it that undercoating your frames traps moisture against the metal with all the salt and shit making it actually rust more. I would try fluid film if I were you, thats the Next best thing to undercoating. Plus the frame gets to breath. I picked up a couple cans of rustoleum undercoating but have yet to touch them. I learned of this whole moisture thing right after i purchased :(

I have heard the same thing with undercoating the frame, this may sound stupid but someone also told me that the paint wouldn't hold moisture where it's thinner and isn't as heavy as a coat....not sure if that's true just repeating

I have read the same. You would think a heavy coat is better, but in this case a light coat is better.

So if i get under my truck with a hose and spray that shit down and scrub it with soap then undercoat WHAT WILL HAPPEN??? I have been thinking about this, i mean it seems reasonable. How can chemicals and stuff get trapped if you clean the entire frame a throw a heavy coat of undercoating on it.

Here's my plan sand it lightly to get some surface rust off then go over it with the rustoleum rust reformer then go over it again with a few coats of regular rustoleum possibly the farm equipment or chassis spray....because "rustoleum stops rust from forming and stops it in general"

Just barely gave it a go. Here's a few pics of before, partially wire brisked, and then final. I will do another coat and keep working on the rest of the frame and hope it helps the truck last a little longer at least. Luckily the inside of the frame isn't rusted, just the outer part! But man, it sure looks better at least haha. IMG_20170510_142141.jpg IMG_20170510_151733.jpg IMG_20170510_142148.jpg IMG_20170510_151740.jpg

Rust will always get you some where! Just bust rust twice a year and you'll be good!

I also use the Rustoleum rust reformer at least once a year after a wire cup on a drill to clean frame . It lasts a little while . I just got a can of POR 15 top coat. Going to do another coat of Rustoleum then brush on the top coat .Im sure it will be a pain in the ass .

Epoxy primer 3 coats followed by any frame paint and all following one helluva prep on frame new or old and should be done on new or almost new tacomas before rust starts ! Fluid film has to be done over and over cause its not the answer not to mention its a big mess that dirt sticks to ! The epoxy in the primer is what stops it if done correctly also need to swab out inner frame and cross members with prepsol on a microfiber rag taped to a 3 foot rubber antenna , then Eastwood inner frame coating 3 coats ! But after all of this do NOT drive in salt ! Buy cheap car and put liability only on it for winter , in the end that is cheaper than destroying frame wheels and entire truck plus peace of mind !

I use fluid film a couple times a year. My truck frame looks really good especially after 3 years here in NY. That's what I would recommend.

    +1

I've had no problems with the smell and found it dissapates quickly. I hit the frame twice a year, once in spring and once in fall. Looks brand new, to this point.
