2016 GMC Canyon SLT w/ LineX and....
Disclaimer: This thread is only intended to share my experiences with my 2016 Canyon. I've spent 15 years owning Tacomas and decided to try something different (for my own reasons). For those who are curious - I hope you find the information interesting. If you are not interested - please do not read and please do not make this thread into competition discussion.

Purchased Februrary 2016. 6cylinder 4WD SLT Crew cab short box
Paid: $37,271 bottom line. Added LineX and Mudflaps
    Current mileage - about 6,500miles.

    Modifications:
    Tinted Front windows
    OEM Running boards
    Husky Floor mats
    AFE Air filter
    Console Vault
    Homelike
    OEM exhaust tip
    Bakflip G2 Tonneau cover

I'll be totally honest - I had a chip on my shoulder when I first bought the truck. It took me awhile to truly warm up to it. I'm really beginning to like the truck. It does what I need to do, drives nice, and is comfortable. That's all anyone can ask.

    Issues/concerns:
**Several of the interior panels were loose that needed a good push on them, they'd snap in place. A door trim piece needed replaced because the 'snaps' were messed up. Replaced by dealer.
**Transmission hiccup/stutter in slower speeds (30-40mph). Dealership flashed an update to the transmission programming (much better, but not perfect).
**Intellilink system would go blank/reset. Favorite bar would disappear.... Dealership flashed an update to the programming. Been good ever since.
**A couple paint defects on roof - looks like a couple 1/4" sized pieces of dirt under clearcoat. Dealership is aware but I don't want them to fix it (at this point) because a repaint might make it worse.
    **Apple Carplay /Android Auto update
**Ignition & KEY get HOT especially in summer. Notified but no results as of yet. Doesn't happen in colder weather.
**Hitch Recall - some of the hitches were labeled improperly for their rating. Mine was fine. Recall was to check to make sure you have the proper hitch installed.
**HVAC Recall - I'm not sure of the details on this, but its like a piece of the HVAC system were cracking and not functioning properly. Recall was to 'check' and inspect the part - add a collar to strengthen.
**When in Auto4WD and 4WD - there is a loud squeaking noise when going under 5mph. Dealer has been notified but couldn't replicate the problem. I'm keeping an eye on this.

    Comments / Thoughts:
This is my first Crew cab truck - which is nice to be able to carry 4 additional bodies. I have missed the fullsize bed a bit....I've gotten used to it. The Canyon bed is deeper, so that helps when you're loading it up with yard waste. A long box won't fit in my garage. I absolutely LOVE the Remote start using the OnStar/GMC app. I can start the truck from within my office building (or anywhere for that matter). This truck has a lot of bells & whistles that I never had before in vehicles I've owned, so I'm a bit spoiled. The Mechanicals? I'm still learning.... and there are things that are different. I was shocked to learn there's no radiator cap - only the overflow tank. I don't think there's a tranny dipstick either (2007 taco didn't have one either).

Aftermarket Support: These trucks have only been around for 2 years - there still seems to be a lack of aftermarket support. It has improved over the last year..... Things I couldn't find just 1 year ago, are now out and available. Things are improving.

Of course, I'm a member on the Colorado forum. Last year when I first joined - I can't say I was enjoying it. They had a lot of rules & mod police that were over the top. Since then - they've rid the forum of one moderator and have since lifted some of the rules. It's been much better since. The forum isn't nearly as populated or has as many members as Tacomaworld, but I have noticed it's been growing a lot lately. I'm seeing more and more guys doing all sorts of things to their trucks, including lifts & offroading. The sad part is....these guys are putting 33" tires on them and NOBODY makes gear sets yet. Toyota and the Tacoma has a always been the offroading leader with a HUGE lead in offroading culture - that's a no brainer. Guys will be guys..... It's refreshing to see the offroading culture sprout and grow in these trucks. I'll be curious to see how the guys put the ZR2 to its paces.....

It's only been 1 year.... like the tacoma, there are a lot of complaints about their trucks and there are a lot of folks who are very happy with them. So far.....Mine has been good. However, it's only been 1 year. The Quality and resale remains to be seen. I've never purchased an extended warranty for any vehicle I've owned....and I don't currently have one. I might revisit my research at the 2.5 year mark and see where I'm at.

Toyota will always be my first love.... but .... I wished they offered a lot more options that I'm totally wiling to pay for. That's the main reason (and only reason) I switched.

I continue to visit this forum - as I enjoy the people and keeping an eye on the progression of things. You never know....one day, I'm sure I'll be back in a Toyota again.

    Peace!

Thanks for the write up. I was considering a Colorado but decided on my Taco (which I've been very happy with). I've had several GM products and have been more or less happy with all of them.

Thanks for the write up. I was waiting on the new Canyons when my F150 was totaled a year too soon. I made the jump to Tacos. I'll be eager to see what happens with the ZR2 over the next decade, as I could see myself in one when my Taco has a decade of use under the belt.

As long as you're happy, that's all that matters. Keep on truckin! We'll see you back in a Taco sooner than you think.

Congrats on your Canyon. I hope you have better luck with yours than I had with mne. Bought a 16 SLT back in March and it stalled 5 times in 7 mos. Took it to two different dealers on 3 occasions and the even got GM engineers involved and yet no fix. There were also other problems with it like drivers window went up and down when it was supposed to go up, front end collision warning either going off or not working at all when no one in front of me, radio screen going blank, etc, etc... Needless to say after the last stall, that was the last straw. I traded it for a 17 Tacoma SR5. Glad I did as it hasn't stalled. However, I do miss some of the technology that was in the Canyon. Toyota could learn from GMC in that regard. But, I'm getting some of it back thanks to tips in this forum! Again, good luck! I truly do hope you have better luck!

Thanks! Yea, there are lots of complaints & issues for various things. Luckily - my dealer has been able to address my issues (knock on wood). It's only been 1 year for me ....so I don't know what to expect going forward. Seems like there are good ones and bad ones - and the bad ones are plagued with multiple issues.

Sorry to hear you had issues. I would've kicked it to the curb also - and won't hesitate if I have lots of issues that can't be addressed.

I hope your Taco treats you right and continues to stand as a Toyota should!

Hahhaaa.... a lot of the guys take it off. I'll probably remove mine in the spring. I just can't force myself to lay on the garage floor in cold weather. LOL

It's supposed to help with gas mileage....Oooooo whaaaa...didn't buy the truck for gas mileage anyway. :)

Also, I did get the extended warranty for the Canyon and got most of the cost back after trade... Didn't get one for the Taco... Owned plenty of Toyotas in the past, so know the quality... Jealous of your luck so far!

Dear God, don't jinx me!! I'll have to weigh my options when its time to buy one. Pending the cost & history up to that point....

My brother has one identical to yours. he paid 42 I think - it is fully loaded... I am a envious of the interior, comfort, and bells and whistles. I was considering waiting for the turbo diesel but...decided on the taco. I think that if you wanted to be a serious wheeler then the taco wins - much more following, parts, support, & flexibility. Just depends on what you want out of it. I do not like the low-clearance of the front end of the canyon; looks like you would rip off the bumper if you run over something. In any case, you have a good looking ride.
