This may sound stupid, but whenever I read spacer/leveling kit threads, it seems OP's say the ride is the same as stock, and the usual suspects chime in the ride is stiffer, it will sag, you ruined your truck blah blah blah...

    So who's right?

From 10,000', it seems that the truck weight hasn't changed, so its the same pressure on the coils. But then I read that spacers add "pre-load" to the coils? If I put insoles in my shoes, the real soles don't have more pressure on them. Soooo can somebody politely explain this?

    ...too much shit to list.
There are two types of spacers. Top plate spacers and preload spacers.
Top plate spacers go on top of the entire coilover assembly (on top of the top plate) which pushes the whole coilover down. This does not change the spring characteristics as it's not preloading the coil any more than stock. It does however push the LCA farther down.
Preload spacers go between the top of the coil and the coilover top plate. These type of spacers preload the spring which does affect ride/spring characteristics as the coil spring has more spring potential energy with a deformed (compressed) spring.

Spacers and 5100 Bilstein achieve lift by to different methods.
5100 Bilstein explained with your shoe analogy.
In your example the original insoles are not the coils. The insoles would be the tires same weight applied with or without extra insoles.
For the analogy to work your feet are the coils. Take a pair of leather dress shoes and insert a 2mm insole. Little lift and still plenty of room to wiggle your toes. Now put it a 6 mm insert. More lift but starting to get snug. Now put in 12 mm inserts and get a shoe horn because the are going to be a pain to put on an your feed are going to be stuffed in your shoes like 10lbs of shit in a 5 lbs bag.

When you install a spacer it lowers the hight of the top plate on the shock. By lower the top it pushes the lower control arm down gaining ride hight. It does not compress the coil to achieve lift. You do lose down travel because of the spacers
Hope this helps drop the mic. I am out.

The way I see it, the train launched with OP, got to its destination with post 5, then was quickly derailed. Anyone still aboard after the destination was reached is responsible for their own safety.
