    Likely the countershaft bearing.

Which means the top end comes off, the motor gets pulled from the frame, cases get split, and the entire trans gets torn apart to replace one shaft and one bearing.

I'm going to take the chain off and check for front sprocket shaft play here in a little bit. A buddy recommended i do that since the noise only started after i cleaned and lubed my chain, which could mean a sticky link in the chain that isn't rolling right

sounds like a stuck link, very strange that it does it only going forward

    for me

Its a good chain though....i'm not sure why it would've happened.

Its a DID vx2 520 xring chain. Most expensive chain i've ever purchased

I don't believe so. I'll have to check again.

Its weird that it makes the noise intermittently and i can only hear it in neutral

Dang that's weird. DID chains are the best, I've always had good luck with them.
I'm sure this is done already, but the chain/sprocket aren't catching the chain slider anywhere correct? Like a small piece that's only catching forward but not backwards.
As you said, pull the chain off and see if the sound continues just spinning the sprocket, and check for any play in the shaft.

Zero shaft play. Zero bearing play. Chain is gorgeous and feels true.

Its the front sprocket. The tines on it have worn prematurely and were starting to chew up the splines on the countershaft. A new front sprocket and copious amounts of red loctite should fix the issue.
