Help changing switches

im having problems changing the switch that came with the TRS wiring harness to the CH4x4 push switch
The TRS switch has 3 wires 2 red and 1 black, the CH4x4 switch has 4 wires
Here is a picture to help, I have an add on circuit but I don't know which wire to use, thanks for your help.
Btw the black is already connected to other black wire.

 

On the back of the box there's a diagram. Can you please take a shot of it and upload it? From there I can tell you how to wire it.

So:

Green wire > Power from add a fuse
Red 1 (next to green) > Goes to device's power you want to turn on (lights, etc).
Red 2 (next to black) > Goes to accessory, or illumination so it comes on when powered or when you turn on your lights.
Black > Ground.

 

These switches take a minute to figure out the first time lol, but ^^^^ this looks like good info. I have the other kind of switch (not a stock style) but it has all the same things - good work!

 

What is throwing me off is the red and black wire are coming from the relay and the wire with the 12VOL tag came attached to the switch, also

This one you'll either:
1. Tap into an wire in your harness that's tied to your lights, so when you turn on your lights, it comes on too.
2. You wire it to an accessory wire like your 12v cig lighter, so when you turn on your truck, it comes on.
*NOTE* DO not wire that to a 12v hot all the time, or it will always be illuminated.

I see what you're trying to do now, so the Green wire on the CH4x4 switch will NOT come from the add a fuse, it will come from the power wire (30) of the relay. The Add a fuse wire will go into the Remote turn on Lead (86) of the relay.

1. Ground (85)- ground to battery negative or to the body mount ground.
2. To CH4x4 Switch - Green (30) - This will go to Green wire on your CH4x4 Switch. ** You are getting power from an add a fuse, but if you're using a relay, you want to send the power from the add a fuse to this relay for the remote turn on lead (86).
3. Remote Turn on Lead (86) - This will connect to your add a fuse to "trigger" the relay to start up.
4. Main battery power (87) - This will connect directly to your + Terminal on the battery.
5. Reverse power switch (87a) - This will not be used. It turns OFF power when it gets a signal from the Remote Turn on Lead. Your relay might not have this cable, but you're not using it anyways.

 

Basically a relay is a switch. When it gets power from the add a fused circuit, it sends a signal to the Remote Turn on Lead (86) and tells the Power INput (87) to send power to the Accessory (30). It's also grounded, as all 12v items are (85).

No problem. And remember to Fuse the connection from the Relay to the battery if it doesn't have one already.

That way, if you screw up the wiring, it should stop there before it sets your truck on fire.

Kinda only kinda kidding, be careful and take your time to make sure you're happy with it before you hook it up.

The way this is wired current for the accessory flows from:
battery -> relay pin 30 -> relay pin 87 -> switch pin 1 -> switch pin 2 -> accessory -> ground.

The switch is only rated for a few amps but honestly I wouldn't run more than an amp through it. These switches were really designed to enable the relay "control" signal on relay pin 86 with relay pin 85 being tied to ground (battery negative / chassis).

For safest operation I would wire it this way:
Fuse (you choose always on or on with key in ignition, 2Amps) -> switch pin 1
Switch pin 2 -> relay pin 85
Relay pin 86 -> ground
By doing this the switch controls the relay (i.e. When the relay is enabled pins 30 and 87 are shorted together; when disabled these two relay pins are not shorted). Minimal current flows through the switch.

Battery -> inline fuse (sufficient for accessory and rated lower than what the wiring can handle)-> relay pin 30
Relay pin 87 -> accessory 12v connection
The other wire of the accessory will be tied to battery negative / chassis.

The relay is meant to handle high current (refer to marking on part for its rating, #A). All the current to the accessory flows through the relay which is what you want.

I'm not trying to step on any toes . . . Just want to prevent a potential electrical issue / fire.

 

You are not stepping on toes. I'm glad you mentioned it. You are 100% correct, the way I wired it will have the full current of the accessory going through the switch. When I was drawing the drawing I thought it might be better to run from the Fuse > switch and from switch to relay, and now that I'm reading yours, it's certainly the better way.

Essentially OP, both ways will work, but @road2cycle puts less electrical strain on the switch and removes a possible weak link.

While I can't read the wire tags well in the picture...

One of the red harness wires provides the fused battery power feed to the switch. This wire needs to connected to the switch green wire

The second red harness wire needs to be connected to the switch "Red 1" wire. This runs back to pin 86 on the relay and activates the relay

Add a circuit wire needs to be connected to the switch "Red 2" wire. This will also
need to be ran to the fuse box and plugged into the "tail" fuse.

Black harness wire connected to switch black wire.

With the switch wired as mentioned, this switch can be used to turn on lights at anytime.
