Is a Locker Needed?

I'm going on a trip to Moab at the end of May, it'll be my first time. I was going to get a rear locker before heading out there, but second guessing if I really need one or not. So far my truck has made it up most things I point it at as long as I have the right line.

I know articulation is a big thing there and I don't have the most amount of flex, therefore I'm sure the locker will be nice in the rear for when a tire comes off the ground. However, I wondered if the surface of the rocks is more than enough traction to get around. Also from what I've seen there seems to be by-passes on a majority of the major obstacles.

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks everyone.

Ok, awesome. Tone honest I'm not entirely sure, I'm tagging along with a group of friends.

 

A locker is needed only when you don't have one . As soon as you get the front and rear done ....you seem to never lock in !!

If you get a chance check out White Rim, Elephant Hill (might want armor/lift/sliders depending on your line choices), and beef basin (some like this for the view, some don't). There are a TON of other good trails out there as well. Have a good time! Based on the photos in your build page you'll be fine. Just tread lightly and have fun

 

I'm stressing on clearance. In a couple weeks I'm headed to moab, after a few other stops and was wanting some input on my stock pro and it's abilities. Since putting on a rtt, camper shell, bumper it's dropped about an inch. Any input on what I shouldn't try..also have stock tires. : /

 

If a Crown Vic can hit some trails on Moab, your stock 4WD will do it. Just gotta know what it can and shouldn't do.

 

Just be sure to read up on any trails you are thinking about doing. Most trails you'll be fine on out there, such as the lower end stuff and trails with slickrock. It's the spots where you get into the sand/loose gravel and articulate where it comes in handy.

The trip was awesome. I still haven't gotten around to posting any pictures yet. I needed up not getting a locker for the trip, but still made every single trail I tried, except needed help once on Hamburger Hill.
