Yeah, fuses are supposed to be as close to the battery as possible, especially in higher current applications. A few amps for some lights should be fine so long as you use heavier than necessary wire.

If you're running a hot wire from your current fuse block (on a fuse) to another fuse block, you'll be fine.

This is so confusing for me. I might end up buying another sPod and doing it that way

No man it's really not bad you just have to dive into it. I knew jack shit about wiring or 12v or what the hell electricity does lol

If I were closer to you I'd give you a hand... but only one because the other would be occupied by a beer.

That should work just fine, just be mindful of your wire run length. That one has 10 feet of wire built into it. If you need to go longer I'd replace the wires with a heavier gauge or swap the fuse out in the plug to a 7.5 amp or lower. That still may be a lot of amps for LEDs, so check how much your lights require and adjust the system to be fuseable at 20% more of their required amperage draw.

Hm - maybe it's just worth doing a custom harness then. I'd prob want at least 20ft of wire to ensure I can route cleanly. The USB port is 5A, so wouldn't that be the max draw, or I guess it could peak higher. 7.5A fuse might be ideal.

Is there a guideline for Amps+length = gauge?

edit: I could either switch the wires or lower the fuse, but wouldn't need to do both, correct?

If the port is fused at 5A then that's all you'll get. You'd blow the fuse for the port before something happens with the fuse in the plug, so really you shouldn't need to mess with the fuse in the plug at all.

Yeah there's a guideline just as you mentioned above. Most wire gauge charts you see on a google search have a safety factor built into them, so keep in mind that there's a slight overkill, but try to be as close to recommended as possible.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem running 20' of 12v 5a (works out to 60 watts, so not very much) with 20 ga wire.

i tend to go gauge overkill. i think i got 12 gauge to run my wires to the bed. still haven't run the wiring though. thinking about a hobby box to protect the back of my panel as suggested here. i'm still not sure about how i'm going to do that.

Ya - the 10a fuse might work fine since it will be powering all of the stuff on the panel so i'd like to give some headroom before it pops. Maybe I up the gauge just in case?

finally got her wired, just need to build a box for behind the panel. a zip-loc container may work for that. at least now i can power my fridge and fan.

had to cut the hell out of my fuse box mount to accommodate the super charger. it needs more support so i'm thinking of putting a piece of doweling or something in the middle for structure.

looks great - what gauge wire did you run from your fuse box to the panel?
