So yesterday I received a 3/8 synthetic winch rope I purchased from a popular vendor, not trying to bash anyone so I will omit the vendor. I went to install it today and noticed an imperfection on the rope, does anyone know if that is normal and ok to use?

I was plant engineer of a rope manufacturing company (New England Ropes) for 12 years in the 70s/80s. What you are seeing is a "slub". It happens with polyaramid fibers, because of their low their sheer resistance (tensile strength is better than steel). Small bits of fiber break off and collect on any guides in the yarn twisting machines, once they reach a certain mass they fall off and get twisted into the yarn--not all that pretty, but not a significant factor for a working rope. On yacht braid it would be cosmetically unacceptable.

A good thing about braided rope is that when it breaks it breaks clean, snaps back in a straight line, and then falls limp to the ground. With wire one strand will generally break first and then unwind from the bundle, and flail about removing limbs and heads from anyone unfortunate enough to be standing next to (I've seen the military slow-mo films of this happening)...

Thanks for the information, sorry for the late reply. I will give the rope a chance and hopefully it performs as it was designed.

What's the chance that the first response is from someone who managed a rope factory? Haha. And only 15 minutes after the op!
