I'll make it short and sweet up top and I'll give the full story and background after.
I've created a mounting system that I believe has TONS of potential for us. The system is still under development but is pretty close to completion.
    Here it is:
    IMG_3359.jpg
(final version will be painted black)
and here is the first thing I mounted on it:
    IMG_3330.jpg
I mounted a tablet, I wanted a second screen with more utility.
All you do is bolt your accessories on.

HERE IS THE MORE BORING PART
I've had my taco for about 6 months and one of the things that really bothered me was that I could not find a good spot for my phone but eventually I ended up buying this...
    IMG_0164.jpg
...an iOttie mount that is very sturdy and can hold a tablet.
but it never really made me happy for a few reasons. First, it is huge... so when I'm not using it it becomes an eye sore and blocks the view. So take it off right? :notsure:
NOT... part of what made it so sturdy is that the suction cup has a kind of gel on it that makes it have a REALLY REALLY good grip, which makes it hard to remove from whatever surface it is attached to.
I knew that there had to be a better way, most commercial products that attaxch to the windshield will have the same obstruction problem and others wouls not be as sturdy or have other drawbacks like dirty adhesive or flimsy attach methods.
So... I searched TW and found someone already had a solution that almost everyone seems to like (if you are reading this you probably already know what im talking about) but that solution was not really for me, it may be sturdy and mostly out of the way but it doesn't leave the vent as useful as it is without it.
There had to be a way to do it.
I've found it. (or at least I think I have)
I found a spot where I can sit my phone and even my tablet and have be completely out of the way, both from the windshield and the head unit, even with the tablet!!!
    IMG_0163.jpg
But then I thought... well, if I can mount a phone or a tablet, I could mount other stuff too.
and so it came to be... a mount that I can use to mount anything, all I need is different adapters and I can screw anything in. I can make the hole pattern match that of the RAM mounts for example.
The second thing that came to mind is switches, all I would need is a housing for them that I can bolt in. Thats in the works but here is a sketch of what it may look like.
    IMG_0162.jpg
What about a CB radio? gopro? radar detector? basically anything, all it would need is an adapter that has a compatible bolt pattern.

There are Metal plates on the top and bottom of the plastic, the bottom is threaded, you just turn the srcews and they will not come loose (by themselves)

    I don't have a 3rd gen but a suggestion:
If you can make it so that it's compatible with RAM mounts I'd bet you'd get a ton of interest.

IT IS, this specific prototype (picrtured) wasn't but that is one of the first improvements that is on the betas.

Can you share a pic (or drawing or whatever) of it before putting it on? Still unsure how it actually attaches, do you have to drill holes in the trim?

I've seen folks mount RAM balls in the exact same location, and then use RAM mounts for whatever they needed to mount. Seems like a better way to go due to the vast availability of RAM accessories. You could sell your mount/bar with RAM balls attached (as an option)...

It attaches with bolts and, yes, holes have to be drilled through the trim. but that part of the trim is invisible unless you lean your head all the way up. The top plate also remain invisible until you bolt something to it.

RAM mounts are definitely popular here and YES, beta versions will come with a hole pattern compatible with RAM mounts.

I added a little poll to see what adapters should be produced first.

CNC'd this bad boy for a buddies 3rd Gen a couple of months ago (I own a 15'), he has his phone, radar detector, camera, and a passenger phone holder mounted to it via RAM mounts.

ETA: this one is hard anodized but we were thinking of adding a couple of features to it and switching to helicoiled delrin instead of ano and tapping

I've been using the one lostsheep made for a while now, love it. Modified a ram mount and inductive charger to charge my phone on the cradle without fumbling with wires.

Good work @Lostsheep seems like a very well built/machined piece of work. Something like that could be bolted right onto mine.
