X 1,000,000. Leave the Fram on the store shelf. If you purchased the Fram, proceed to the nearest garbage can an toss.

Stock but I use it anyway!!!
I get the Pro-Tec 130's. They are made by wix which is a good filter and its only $20 bucks for a case of 12. I put them on all of the tacomas in one of my fleets I service and several of their trucks have gotten 300,000+ miles. I've had no problems with them.

Kinda late to this discussion, but I have a 2013 4 cylinder with about 83K that I've been having the dealership do the oil changes on - full synthetic. Decided to do myself and rushed off to Autozone for filter and drain plug gasket - needed wiper blades anyway. Store employee suggested Bosch filter, Mobil 1 0W-20 and a metal strap filter wrench.

Get home under truck, plug drain plug and start working on filter - NFG - not enough room to swing or even tighten down with the metal shield around 1/2 the filter. Did notice the original Toyota filter should accept a "cap" type filter wrench. After about 2+ hours put the new oil in without changing the filter and started looking here for info. WOW - tons of info for the V6, but not much for the 4 cyl!

What "cap" tool will fit the original filter and will it fit the Bosch?
When I do get the filter off, do I need to drain and refill the oil again? Filter looks high enough to be above the pan.

No idea... I use large channel locks to easily remove my stuck oil filter on my 2.7L, just an idea

Whats so bad about Fram? Not trying to start a debate, im just wondering why. Did you have a motor tank because of one? Im wearing one right now :anonymous:

Go to technical chat and look in the sticky for
Toyota Oil Filter (Made in Thailand) vs. the competition........

I also had a fram motorcycle filter that almost fell off because the threads were not cut in spec.

Use the V6 filter - as others mentioned more filter media. With the bigger filter, synthetic oil and the 6-quart sump of the 2.7L you can go 10,000 miles between oil changes with no ill effects.

So my last tacoma was a 2010 4cyl. You are going to loose oil just doing a filter swap, its not like the V6 where the filter is located at the very top of the engine. So you are going to have to be fast with the hands to get the old off and the new one on. Like you'll loose a lot.
Best bet is to go back to autzone find and pull the Bosch filter out of the box and go to the cap filter wrenches (I'm imagining you are talking about the ones that a 3/8 ratchet goes into). Try the different wrenches until one snuggly fits. Put the oil filter back on the shelf and just buy the wrench.

If that same wrench doesn't get the told filter off, a good pair of adjustable pipe pliers will do the trick, or the old method of a screw driver through the side. Def have some more oil standing by for when you get the new filter on since you will have to top it off again.

Side note the 2005-2015 V6 and 4cyls all use the same filter. Not sure on the 2016+ V6s.

Bill - I am also a Wix fan, using the WIX 51516, about an inch longer than the replacement Wix shows for a V6 Tacoma - could I ask which you use?

For metal canister style filters - either Lisle Tools parts # 63250 or Lisle Tools part #63600. Google both. One fits smaller filters; the other fits larger filters

    I use a strap-style filter wrench: https://www.jbtoolsales.com/gearwre...lter-wrench/?gclid=CLT2_Laf-tMCFUpNfgodQVQDMQ
It fits all sizes, plus you can fit a 1/2" extension into the end and make it as long as you need it to be. Sometimes it's tricky to get the strap around the filter if it's buried... the strap material is flexible and tends to collapse at certain angles (won't stay open as you feed it down over the filter). Also under extreme torque (tight filter) it might crush the canister but it's being disposed anyway so who cares.
The standard orange can Fram oil filters are adequate to maintain the manufacturer's warranty. That is not saying much since the manufacturer is only on the hook for a limited time/mileage, so they only care that nothing fails during that initial warranty period. Check the YouTube video showing a gaping hole in the filter media of an orange can Fram, plus they are made with cardboard end caps... no thank you. Of course there are worse filters and some say Fram gets a bad rap ("I've never had a problem with Fram.") Bottom line for me is this: there are better filters available for the same money (e.g. Purolator, Motorcraft, OEM, etc.)

My GF's V6 Camry has one of those media only (without the can) filters or whatever they are called. Is the fram no good for that application either? Thats what i put on hers at the last change.

You are describing a "cartridge" style oil filter with the replaceable element inside, whereas spin-on oil filters are properly called "canister" style.
Like I said, FRAM is adequate but you can do better. Since it's already installed I would just run it for the service period. Don't worry about it.
Going forward, Bosch and Purolator cartridge filters appear to be price-competitive with the Fram. Bosch and Purolator are better quality.

Right now still Purolator Pure One. I had a couple from a sale, and since they fit my other vehicle........ I just buy which ever is on sale when I need more, and std sizes, not the larger units.

I bought a few Frams just because it is annoying getting the Mobil 1 filter off (being that it was smooth). I guess I'll shop around for a better brand next time. I didn't realize that they were not very good.
