Opinions wanted on this topic. I need to replace our over the range standard microwave , which is not convection, and considering one with. It costs more of course for convection. Is it worth the price or just a useless option? GE has one for close to a grand, I am considering one much cheaper than that. Thanks

I guess I would ask do you actually cook a lot of stuff in the microwave? We use it for heating things up and cooking like frozen veggies, instant mashed potatoes and stuff like that. From my understanding is the convection part use high speed hot air to brown/crisp foods in the microwave as the magnetron heating element cooks the food in the normal manner. If you don't actually cook a lot of foods that you need browned or crisped in there then I don't really see a need for it. Usually when I want that I just use the oven or the toaster oven.

I guess you can cook in there instead of heating up a big oven for say 20 or so frozen fries etc..Or maybe some quick home made mac n cheese etc....

^^That seems to be the best use.
Or I guess if you had multiple dishes that needed different oven temps.

Toaster oven works better for that.
