I love my Tacoma, but a diesel would have been badass. Is there any way to get one in America legally? I'd rather not wait 13 years to get an 05 hilux

Nope. I've exhausted every avenue. Not possible, zilch, nada. Very sad story... that's my dream vehicle.

    America.

God knows honestly, as a general rule, we hate diesels that aren't at least 6000cc and annoyingly loud and broish. Blame EPA or cafe regs, Obama, bush, or trump. It's all and none of their faults.

A lot of it has to do with the American market, some of it has to do with EPA diesel emission regulations, a lot of things go into it really. Unlike many here I'm not a big fan of having a diesel truck though.

Because the hilux would get hit by import tax as it's built in Thailand?
Because hilux can haul a lot more than the taco and would hit tundra sales?
Because the taco is aimed at dudes like me that commute to work in it (and want comfort), not farmers taking crops to market over cobble stone trails.

... with boxed frames that happen to be separate from their bodies, that also happen to be hiding an incredibly badass 2.8l turbo diesel that makes young boys wake up with sticky shorts.... too far?

Wrong answer. It's because we have what's called a Chicken Tax.

    https://www.quora.com/Why-cant-I-own-a-Toyota-Hilux-in-America

We don't have a diesel because Toyota doesn't feel the need to add one. They could most definitely add it just like how GM did in their midsizes. I don't know much about diesels but I've read a couple things on here that suggest they get expensive fast.

I knew about the chicken tax, but it was escaping my memory, good call. Anyway, the American diesel market would pervert the reliability of Toyotas motors anyway. They probably don't think it's worth it to stick a can of piss on it and over egr it until it's choking on its own farts to death, worried about reliability in the long run to make a very small market size happy..

Not sure if USA's reasons are the same as Canada's reasons but... Canada won't allow them because they're not manufactured in US or Canada, therefore the quality assurance, standards, blah blah blah, etc isn't guaranteed. They state there's no way to assure all safety guidelines were followed during manufacturing/assembly. Yoda yoda yoda...

Who knows if any of that is their "real" reason.

Is it just for diesels? Every vehicle sold in Canada is made in Canada or the US?

You can get them in Mexico but not in a diesel configuration. I think the closest place the diesels go is Brazil or Venezuela.. could be completely wrong on that. You still won't be able to register it in the us though. FBI comes a knocking and takes her away to be smashed like a June bug.

    All gas and diesel vehicles.

Only vehicles that don't have to follow all that nonesense are buses, motorhomes that are on bus chassis, etc. No idea why they're exempt though...

There are very very very difficult ways to get around all that and import a foreign car but it's too lengthy to post it all here... takes weeks of paperwork and approval from a dozen people from a few different government departments.
