I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone on TW who's obsessed with the Volkswagen Amarok.

    Yes

It wasnt smooth sailing driving it back from Texas, it kept throwing an error code and going into limp mode. But I think we got that issue figured out.

I got photos scattered on a camera and couple of different phones i need to put them all in one place.

At one time diesel was scrap material left over when gasoline was refined from crude oil. It was sold to farmers and truckers at a tiny fraction of the cost of gas just to get rid of it. Performance in private vehicles was poor, acceleration was poor, it was dirty, smelled bad and smoked badly. But with the introduction of turbo engines many guys found it suddenly had plenty of power and was worth the negatives. Especially when gas was $2-$3/gal., diesel was $.40/gal., and got almost double the fuel mileage.

But that was the 1980's and 1990's. With EPA regulations now requiring cleaner burning fuel today diesel engines don't get any better fuel mileage than gas engines when unloaded. When pulling a load they do get better fuel mileage. But the cost of diesel fuel is now more expensive than gas. Diesel engines cost significantly more and cost significantly more than gas engines to maintain.

In most of the rest of the world gas is still $5/gal and due to less stringent pollution standards diesel is a fraction of that. Those same vehicles sold here would have to meet strict pollution standards that would kill performance. If they could even meet the standards. Look what happened to Volkswagen. Diesel engines make sense in lots of other places. They no longer make sense here other than in heavy equipment. Even most of the guys buying 3/4 ton trucks would be better off with a big gas V8.

Why not just go down south and buy a hilux, take it completely apart and put it in a shipping container and ship it back to the states and put it back together?

Because when you put it back together and try to register it, you re still gonna get hit with importing a non DOT approved truck which means you will not be able to use it on public roads period.

Just buy a wrecked Tacoma with a clean vin and swap the vin plates over. Nobody will be the wiser...
