I just had a conversation with a friend of mine who is an engineer, and he us convinced that silicone based tire dressings/sprays/wipes can cause cracking on the side of tires that leads to premature ending of the life of a tire. I thought this was interesting and was wondering what the general consensus was here on TW.

I think he could be correct. However there are products out there that have petroleum distillates as the base ingredient. I would assume these products might be better?

Also I was reminded that tires are warranteed based on "tread wear" and not anything that can be considered environmental degradation.

And yes, I did a search on this topic and came up with one thread remotely related from 2010.
