Has anyone every tried installing ATRAC on their truck just by buying the parts from somewhere and putting them in yourself? Would it be a big task you guys think? I'm just looking around and there's a 2007 with the full ATRAC system at my local salvage yard... was thinking about making my way out there to make an upgrade for my truck! (I have an 06 with no ATRAC)

I haven't heard of anyone doing it but I'd be interested in seeing it happen. I think you just need the brake booster and the control module. Not sure what else is involved. You'll have to pull the wiring diagram.

It was an optional add on starting in 2005 and it became standard on them in 2009, I already went and looked at the truck and it looks so complicated to 1) take off and 2) install on a different truck... may just be worth it to get an ARB locker and call it done

Atrac uses a hydraulic brake booster plus the lines. Between that and the wiring and control module I can not imagine it being worth it.

I saw you edited your post... I've done my research and talked to several Toyota specific mechanics about it. But yes, you are right. I don't think it's worth the hassle. More worth to go with an LSD or locker.

Definitely easier, and probably way cheaper going with lockers.

I don't think it was an option in 05, I still have the Brochure from my 08 and nothing at all is mentioned anywhere about the ATRAC System, only optional VSC with TRAC.

TRAC and ATRAC are the same thing, ATRAC only engages while in 4lo though, or atleast that's how it works on my Dad's 2014.

They are 2 different systems, TRAC comes on the Sports and ATRAC comes on the Off Road, they use a different style brake booster.

They are not the same thing. They have a similar function.

Can you please explain the differences to me then? Here's what I've read and how my friend (mechanic at my local Toyota dealership) explained it to me:
They both use the brake boosting system to apply brakes on the slipping wheel to basically simulate a locker, TRAC is more road friendly and is engaged is 2hi and 4hi. ATRAC is something you turn on when in 4lo if you want it on. Turned on via the button.

Thats about all I know for certain. Someone explain it to me please? Also any truck with the TRAC system installed, can EASILY have ATRAC installed because the brake booster is already there, just need the computer system apparently. Again, i got all this from the mechanic, i haven't laid my hands on trucks and done the physical research for it.

TRAC is similar to ATRAC, but ATRAC is much more aggressive. ATRAC is instantaneous power distribution to the tire that needs traction. TRAC is a bit more delayed response to a tire in need of traction.

The off-road has a different brake booster for the ATRAC system. The off-road brakes are way more sensitive, and have a feeling of 'over reacting' in my opinion. Its a feeling of all or none.

The Offroad model has ATRAC. It uses a hydraulic brake booster instead of a pneumatic one to regulate the wheels so it is much stronger and faster as stated above.

Then why did this 2007 have it? I doubt the owner retrofitted his brakes to install it. I'm just extremely confused. EVERYONE has different answers to this question it seems like. Guys from the dealership told me ATRAC was supposed to be on the 2004 tacomas but because they were releasing the second gen the next year, they saved it for the 2005. Again, this is from the guys at the dealership.

ATRAC was in other Toyota vehicles like the Land Cruiser or 4Runner before it went into the Tacoma in 2009. You were misinformed. You are probably thinking of Trac which is totally different then ATRAC.

Guys at dealerships are idiots and rarely know about the product line they work for. I got into a huge argument once with a salesman telling me he has a 4 door bmw m3 e46 body style. I told him that is amazing considering they never ever made a 4 door.

for the confusion on the "option" of atrac on the 05-08 models. it was NOT an option. The option you are referring to is the VSC option which actually uses the same all in one brake booster / master cylinder / abs module as the atrac enabled 09+ TRD OR 4x4, but the 05-08 truck regardless of TRD trim that were optioned with the VSC (vehicle stability control) were not programmed for atrac.

After 08 VSC was NOT an option, and In 09 VSC became standard and code was written for the separate ABS module / vacuum assist master cylinder found on the non TRD OR 4x4's to enable VSC on those truck, and the electric brake booster code was re-written to enable atrac for the TRD OR 4x4's.
