I loaded up my 380lb streetbike in my DC TRD Sport MT last month, got around 14mpg driving from NM to Austin TX. I never went over 5mph above the speed limit and found myself not being able to use 6th unless it was flat ground, any incline and I had to really start pushing on the pedal. I noticed 5th gear worked better if I had any kind of incline at all.

I have 5000 miles on her now and I think I might sell her off and get a 4runner. I really want to like my truck (I own a 2013 TRD DC Sport as well) but so far I never see better gas mileage. I have been watching the forum for someone who will tune these trucks but it might be awhile. I did test drive a limited auto and I think the MT crowd got grandpa tune. I never felt the auto was lacking torque like mine and the gas mileage isn't what I had hoped.

Only thing my truck has on the 4 runner is climate control, and a better nav/head unit, the 4 runners interior is stuck in 2009ish. The off road premium did feel heavy compared to my 2013 4wd TRD.

My guess would be 2WD. Maybe Toyota didn't think 2WD needs this "4WD" feature?

Recently sold my 17 TRD OR auto and I'm considering the MT version, amongst other options. Been driving manual for a while (my past 4 vehicles, including an 06 Tacoma TRD OR). I wanted to find out what your opinions on the 3rd gen MT's vs the 2nd gen MT's, since that's the only thing I can compare it to. Of course, it would be best to test drive the new MT Tacoma's, however my local dealer hasn't had one in stock for me to drive for months now. It's either pre-sold or sold in a day. Go-figure...I'm in Hawaii.

It sounds like 2nd gear on the 3rd gens are wanting a little more power at the lower RPM's and rev matching is probably not going to happen without some fuss. I'm just trying to better understand this option before perhaps flying to another island to test drive (which feels extreme already).

Anyways, appreciate input you guys have.

The experience is quite different, the 2nd Gen has plenty of low end torque. The 3rd Gen gearbox is night and day better as far as shifting as it is buttery smooth, I personally notice the loss of power mainly to be in 1st and 2nd gear and once you are in 3rd and rolling you are good to go.

Count up the number of negative comments about the Gen-3 Tacoma's with Automatics and compare that to the number of negative comments about those with MT's. If you drive in a big city and are constantly going up steep hills and stopping (like Seattle) then I can understand an AT. However I have to ask why you want a truck to drive downtown? Too many today don't know how to drive a manual....We have been dumb'd down to just - Stop and go and aim. Half of the FUN in driving is managing the power train rather than assigning the chore to some radical minded computer. I started driving back in 1958...Never owned an automatic and I still love to drive - Especially my Taco or Camry ....and GUESS WHY?

Not much yet, but do have Flowmaster exhaust, with Rockford Fosgate P600.1Bd 600 RMS Mono amp for my 12" P3 with custom box and a Punch P400-4 Four Channel amp for my mids and highs running 100 watts per channel and have two speakers on each channel, not to mention 6 more hooked to the 4 channels from the headunit as well....Hopefully soon will be a body lift with new tires, and eventually the actual suspension...
I have the 2007 TRD PreRunner, yes 2WD with rear diff lock 6 speed manual. That's funny you mention that tho, because I have been tryign to diagnose the 12 codes I'm getting for no ecm/tcm internal engine, and radiator temp, and random misfire, and too lean, etc etc etc...and I was looking thru the fuses to see if possibly my aftermarket alarm is somehow grounded wrong and effecting the ECM or something and I saw a 4wd fuse, but I don't even have 4wd, so idk, maybe something with similar differentials since it's a PreRunner and I've noticed in the owners manual it always groups PreRunner in with 4wd....IDK I think I may take it into toyota and try and see if I can get them to look at the moisture I've been seeing around the differential, at least I think it's the differential, it's like right below the center console...but maybe they'll take it for the recall and then have it be related...IDK, I'm really stuck and frustrated and can't afford a major fix, so IDK where to go next...sucks.

Thanks shakerhood. I think ultimately I need to test drive one and see how I feel about it. For the past 3 years I've actually been driving a 1991 Toyota pickup, with the 3.0. It's a dog and if comparing that to the new 3rd Gens, I'm sure it's a great improvement. It's been some time since I've driven a MT 2nd Gen, but recall thinking it had plenty get up and go.

Coming from the auto, I'm very familiar with the comments and transmission. I dumped the auto because that transmission would just bug me every day. I felt like I'd have to convince myself that it was fine with me everyday. Not something I could live with for the next 10 to 15 years. FWIW I've also owned the 1st gen and 2nd gen Auto Tacomas and they drive just fine.

While I don't live where there's super steep streets, I'm constantly going up and down to and from work (where I'm at, I'm pretty much driving up and down the mountain slope). Not gonna lie, it gets old.

The Pro with MT's with me are that you select the gear you want when you want, and it's becoming an anti-theft device. The main con for me is actually others not knowing how to drive my MT vehicle. I hunt, fish, and spearfish very often and go with partners for all. Half of the people I go with can't drive stick. It kinda sucks if someone can't drive me to care or safety if I'm hurt.

It's because of the activities I do that I feel I need a truck. Full size trucks are a bit large for me and I'd need to lift it from the get-go for the places I go. I've thought about a 4Runner and trying to work with that, but sounds like a hassle.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to give the MT a bit more thought and test drive one day.

Trying to find a MT to test drive is bad enough at a stealership, let alone a stealership in HI I would imagine...

Have you browsed the regional forum, perhaps theres a benevolent TW 3rd Gen MT owner near you that might let you go for a drive?

I can't help with your error codes, etc., but the differential is directly between the wheels on either end of the vehicle. On the rear axle, its the big part in the middle, where the driveshaft attaches. I think the part you're talking about with the moisture is the transmission at the other end of the driveshaft and below the center console.

Thanks TeecoTaco. I've never really ventured in there and didn't realize there's actually a dedicated thread for my island (Big Island). I may have to try and ask and take someone out to lunch for their troubles.

Ok, yeah you're right I was talking about the transmission and it was more like dusty oil remnants where the transmission and the driveshaft meet right below the ABS lines coming out of the center, but I did see the leak on the differential too.

Yeah you're right it was the trans and it was more of a super dusty oily like remnant around where the trans and the driveshaft meet....but I did find leaking from my diff and my muffler support was snapped. The muffler shop did a chincy job on that shit, even tho it's been over a year I hope they will fix it and check if it made any leaks in the exhaust or somewhere causing those codes.

How do you guys shift to reduce rev hang as much as possible. I find that if I clutch in as soon as my foot comes of the gas the transmission whiplashes a little in gears 1-2-3 but is the easiest way to reduce rev Hang.

Just picked up my truck and put 204 miles on it. did not experience any rev hang at all. Still figuring out the sweet spot for the 1st-2nd shift, but found out that this truck will haul when you bang it off the rev limiter in 2nd. :D

Now, if I could just get it to go into 4lo...

If you clutch in before the engine cuts the fuel it will not rev hang but will cause annoying whiplash when shifting in lower gears.

Seriously, I've drive basically nothing but sticks for 45 years and just don't feel the rev hang, or anything but the awkward 1-2 shift. I did feel it once in the AC sport I test drive but that has bee it. I seem to n=me that you either need to take it slow and easy or jus t slam it for this truck to shift smoothly.

Lately l have experimented by not lifting off the gas and quickly shifting from 1st to 2nd at about 4 grand to keep revs from dropping down in that dead zone.
