We have two mid-size trucks - a '16 Tacoma and a '16 Frontier. Why? My Wife wanted a truck after I got my Taco and she hated the high floor and seating position of the taco. The frontier fits her well, is comfortable to drive and has a great power train combo. It's dated as hell and GM cheap on the inside, but she loves it and we have had not one, zero issues or complaints in her year of ownership and 20k miles. We use her truck on road trips because, frankly, it's a more comfortable drive on the highway and the 5-sp tranny holds gears like a 2nd gen Taco. It's a solid truck and if it were more updated with current technology on the inside, I would have looked hard at one for myself.

I would contend that is not due to reliability or quality of those rides...but to the more conservative, pro-American mindset of rural America (and not suggesting there is anything at all wrong with that.) My mother's side of the family are all farmers. In those families, you were either a Chevy man or a Ford man (haven't met too many Dodge men in my life). My grandfather NEVER bought anything but a Chevy...ever. My uncle bought nothing but Fords...ever. Quality, resale, nothing really mattered (hell, back then they traded them in every year anyway)...family history is what mattered and those families bought Chevys or Fords. Their sons and daughters have often carried on those same mindsets. I gave up on Chevy and Ford in the mid 80's and initially, many family members derided first my Jeeps then my Toyotas. One continues to see both old and new USA badged trucks in rural America for much the same reason, imo.
I do not believe seeing a bunch of USA badged trucks in rural America is any indication at all of their reliability, quality or any other positive factor. The numbers have more to do with the same attitudes that got our current president elected (imo.) Again, not making a negative statement...just calling it as I see it.
By the way, as to "JD Power Initial Quality" results/ratings...initial quality has virtually no relationship to long term quality or long term resale value - at least that is my understanding. Another factor in total initial complaints is in total numbers sold extrapolated to total number of complaints. I don't think the Toyota numbers are significantly out of whack for the numbers sold compared to total number of Chevy and Ford trucks sold.

Initial quality for Tacoma was fine in the past and low for GM. It mattered then didn't it? But now it doesn't matter because it's low for Toyota.

    If the shoe fits...

What's wrong with owning 2 mid size trucks. When I want go off the beaten path or go pick up something I don't have to empty my work truck. She uses the truck to to do her landscaping picking up rocks and plants going to store ex. Both are great no problems SR has 65000 miles on it and the trd has 30000 miles so the both don't sit around they work.

If I had a TRDoff-road and was unsatisfied with the quality, I bet I could go to a Nissan dealer and trade it straight up, or at least not take a beating on their pro model and be happy!

    But Nooo!
Everyone knows that Tacoma is the one to beat on the beaten path

It never mattered. Just fuel for manufacturer adverts. Initial Quality award is for first 90 days only. Who's to say what starts falling apart after that. And the award makes little sense if you look at their scoring. For example, in this most recent case Tacoma has come in last place in mid-size truck category, yet they gave it the winning highest rating of all for Overall Mechanical Quality. So they awarded higher rankings to the others while having lower Overall Mechanical Quality. They also ranked Colorado interior quality higher than Tacoma...while I admit I may be biased, I test drove a Colorado and the interior felt like cheap plastic compared to the Tacoma. I don't see how that's an honest rating.

The overall winner this year, btw, is the Nissian Frontier.

I don't own a Taco...yet. Looking to order soon. And watch the Nazi references, I am Jewish. Not sure National Socialism should be used as a comparison point for loyalty to a truck. But that is just me. But thank you for your interest in German loyalty (or in my family's case...Belgian loyalty.)
