Any idea how much a 99 4cyl, 5spd, 4x4, access cab, with 344k miles and a blown head gasket would be worth?

    In Georgia/South Carolina.

    Other notes from owner:

Pulled into my driveway last week and white smoke started pouring out of engine/exhaust.
    Interior is pretty good.
Front end has been replaced and aligned.
    Will need tires soon.

    Thanks for any insight.

How's the body? I would say anywhere between $1600-$3k

Body and paint looks to be in pretty good shape for the age. It's the kind of light brown/gold color paint, so not really much to write home about but not bad overall. One thing I have not seen as I have not gone to see it in person yet, is the condition of the frame. And I do know that is something to watch out for with regard to rust.

They seem to bring different prices in different parts of the country, I think they fetch the most out in the south west. You are sort of getting a pig in a poke as far as the engine is concerned, Looks like a descent truck, need to check the frame out, find out prices in your area, maybe on line at car dealers or maybe Kelly's blue book, then deduct a big part of what a engine rebuild or replacement would cost from price of what a good running one would cost.

Thanks, yeah the thing that worries me the most would be the transmission. I do not have a history of any work that may have been done to it, not sure if it's ever been rebuilt or anything. I don't even know if the cluth has been replaced or not. 344k is a lot for any transmission I would think.

Toyota trannys are usually pretty bomb proof. But you're going to need to see it in person to be sure. One thing that would make me more hesitant to buy it is if he towed it a bunch without a tranny cooler.

look for shiny metal flakes in the tranny (and engine) oil. If that's the case, adjust your offer accordingly, worst case is a grand or 2 for a new/rebuilt tranny.

At this mileage, I wouldn't worry about if he's replaced the clutch or not. You're going to tear it down to replace the head gasket, might as well go through it bumper to bumper anyway. seals, timing belt, gaskets (duh), water pump, clutch, etc... Do it ALL.

If the rest of the frame/body/interior looks like it's in good condition, and you're not afraid of a half assembled taco in your driveway for a few months, go for it! I wouldn't go more than 2-3 grand, though. Expect to put at least 2-3 grand more into it before driving it.
