So guys I have a 2012 Tacoma on a spacer lift now. I'm looking at options for a true 3" lift. Here are my thoughts:
I plan on doing minimal, very mild off roading. Most of my driving is around town. I would like to keep my 33x12.50r18's. The truck does have a steel bumper and winch on the front and a steel bumper and cap on the rear. It already rubs about everything. I'm doing a cab mount chop this weekend and cutting the flares and liner. I basically only see 2 options. Adnustable Coil overs (1,100$+) and springs and shocks (500$+). What are the pros and cons of both. Obviously coil overs are better, but for the money are they worth putting on my truck? Also I already have minor rubbage on the control arms. Will this get worse with more lift? What are some cost effective options for both setups? Is there something I'm missing like running an adjustable spring perch shock with my current spring/spacer? I'm fine with the height on the rear of the truck but want to achieve about 1.5" more lift on the front.

I've never seen such a suited up mall crawler before....

Since you already went balls to the walls, get coilovers. They'll ride a lot nicer and be completely adjustable. Only con is they have to be rebuilt every once in a while instead of replaced.

You could go OME but they won't be adjustable and the ride might suffer a tad bit.

Regardless the lift won't help rubbing on the UCA. You need wheels with less backspacing or wheel spacers.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
What kind of driving do you do?

Plan to take it off road? Is price no concern for you? You can do a lot of money isn't a factor.

I say go and see if you can check out some other guys rides at the next meet. If you could get a ride in some of theirs that have coilovers then it might give you a little better idea. Personally, I think coilovers are worth it hands down, but Im likely a little biased.

Definitely look around to see what's out there, but that can get scary quickly. To save yourself some hassle I'd recommend starting with a ballpark budget because you will quickly see that you will pick something and then realize for just a little bit more $$ you can get something "better", but then you will realize that for even a little more $$ ... well you see where I'm going with this. Here's my experience with the lift headache dilemma:

This def has some good info. One thing I notice that many do is they are very eager to get their set up done and over with to have fun. For some of us, once the suspension is figured out we simply move on. For others, they start looking for things to do after they get their truck done which is when some start converting their first "setup" into the next level. Since you arnt big on offroad and the NOVA area is stock friendly for everything, you can get by with almost any set up. Having spacers is probably the least ideal approach out of the lift options out there, but depending on your wheeling interest, you might never push quality components to the amount that you feel they might be worth?

My 2012 is my second Tacoma, with my first gen being a 2004 with a fabtech lift on it. The fabtech lift was shit with its components for any real driving. I grew tired of this and eventually went to some sway away rebuildable 2.5 coilovers. They made such a difference on the road that I have stuck to coilovers. Also the fact that they are adjustable to a considerable range is something to take note for longevity.

With my second gen, I threw on some kings as I had some experience with them from my first gen in the rear shocks. Those shocks ride like butter on the highway when I am just commuting around. When I am off-road, they are that much better...so to me coils are what make me always want to drive my truck as the ride just feels so damn good. But we all have pros and cons we are looking for and willing to accept in our builds. Just remember that you get what you pay for.

Well said, Coot. This is the dilemma we all face post-lifting. I'm happy with my current setup, but if I had the money would I upgrade the components? You bet I would!

Well to answer some questions, I primarily sit in traffic with the truck. I need it to still ride decent. I need about 1-1.5" more lift in the front only to clear the flares (cmc and fender liner cutting will happen this weekend). I plan on doing more trail riding than actual off roading (running over mall parking lot curbs). I would like to be in the 500$ range if possible. I love the way the truck drives now, a little stiff but it's a confident kind of stuff. Can I run 5100s with my current spring AND spacer? What will that do to the ride quality?
