I know there has been tons of debate about this, yet I have been unable to find a consistent answer. Some say they can fit a 285/70/17 with no lift or just a mild leveling kit. Others say even with a 3 inch lift and fender cutting, the tires rub.

I find it hard to believe that almost anyone can fit a 275/70/17 (32.2") with NO lift, yet to fit a 285 that is half an inch taller, a 3 inch lift is required.

My question is this, in order to fit a 32.7" 285 KO2 on my 17 OR DCSB, what is the minimum lift height needed in front and back?

Lift alone won't fit larger tires. Too many variables at play including wheel offset and back spacing as well as alignment. There isn't an easy answer because there isn't a single correct answer due to the number of variables at play. You won't find a one size fits all answer. Every single truck and application is different. Even trucks with the same trim and options have some differences that can make an impact on this. No one single truck is the same as the next. Good luck and remember to try the suspension forum for others feedback. To fit 285s you need to be prepared to trim and chop.

Someone with experience in this could write up instructions for pulling measurements within their wheel well and wheel / tire to determine what size can fit. A handy guide like this would eliminate these questions by 50% globally.

I've never lifted a truck, but I have a kit and tires are on my agenda shortly after. Any instructions I write up would be based off of very little experience.

This is a good answer for every lift vs. tire size question:
So, you also have to trim and modify from somewhere else, and the wheel backspace/offset make huge differences too. Proper wheel alignment (caster to the max) would give you more space too.

Why some people say 3" lift is needed and nothing more, they have not compressed it to the bump stops at full articulation situation. In normal/light offroad driving there is no rubbing, but it´s not the truth.

Could you elaborate. I have a 2/1 King Lift with 17x9, -12 Offset and was wondering if I can run a 285/70/17's with minimal cutting?!?

I would think you could fit 285's with no modding at all with your setup. Many folks have reported fitting 285/70/17 even stock rims on a bone stock Off Road with only some fender trimming/bending to achieve zero rubbing.

I am currently driving a 2017 trd sport with a 3/2” leveling kit, I am sitting on 275/70/17 and no issues but wandered if I could fit 285/70? I could do a little milling or the plastic under the fender if need be,

Everyone seems to feel either one way or another about this. The truth is it depends mostly on what tire you're running (brand/model) as well as your wheel offset. A 285/70/17 KO2 is about 32.7" whereas a Cooper ST Maxx in the same size comes out to 33".

I have seen far too many folks running 285/70/17 in both tires with no lift that I'm truly dumbfounded why so many people like to claim that you need a lift, trimming, and even a cab mount chop. To me that's total overkill.

Just lifted my truck 2.75 front and 1" rear. Running 285/70/17 Cooper STT Pro on Ray10. Only rubbing driver side plastic fender piece when fully clocked to the left. Choose your tires wisely.

I’m sorry if I sound ignorant but I don’t know what an off set is. I had a Mustang GT. I purchased tires and rims had them mounted and balanced and put on. I had the GMC blazer years ago and I did the same thing. I never heard I had to off set rims when I installed them. Please explain. I will do my lift, tires and rims soon, I plan to put 35” on. I plan to do a high clearance front and rear bumpers as well. Thank you guys in advance.

Look at the diagram below and imagine a line down the exact center of the rim ("Wheel Center"), this is like an equator. Offset is a measure of how many milimeters the face of the wheel hub is recessed or poking outwards from that equator. The more "deep dish" rims will have a "negative" while probably the majority of wheels have positive offset instead. It's just a matter of how the manufacturer designed the rim. The more "negative" offset a rim has, the further away from the suspension of the truck it will sit. (Generally, but also depends on the overall width on the rim)

I have a 2018 TRD OR with black rhino Primm wheels with I believer -40 offset along with 285/70r17 nitto ridge grapplers. I have had to do slight trimming to the inner wheel well but have yet to do the CMC or any big major trimming.

Need help picking a wheel OFFSET as there is so much conflicting info on here..

    2018 DCLB TRD Off Road
Fox 2.5 DCS extended 2.75-3” up front, icon RXT leaves in the back (planning on 2.25”)
Camburg Ball Joint UCA (not uniball)
285/70/R17 Cooper ST Maxx (32.99x11.3 true dimensions)

Got everything in a garage pile except the wheels and need to know by someone who really knows their shit WHAT OFFSET WHEELS to order for this to avoid issues and maximize worry free travel off road and when stuffed. Are there any issues with clearing the UCA with 0 offset? I’m fine with trimming whatever plastic needed and plan on a high clearance front bumper so all that can come out. Would be great to avoid the CMC if possible but if needed I’ll do it. Don’t care about looks, just what is the CORRECT offset for max functionality for this setup?! Help!
