It was football season then, though. Big screen NFL games can be a good draw.

That was me. Its definitely an absurd outcome. Here's my take on all this and really the purpose of sharing the post in the first place, although I usually spare you guys with the thoughts that I have. What surprised me, and maybe this is a pop culture thing, that anyone can go out and do something once then call themselves an expert. So these girls go to Mexico, peer in through windows take some notes, then go home and make tortillas. Fine, I don't care, but according to them they are now making authentic food and have mastered the tortilla. That's what bugged me the most about the article, not the "tortilla gate" stealing of recipes or that it's two white girls, but rather that someone thinks they are an expert after a short period of time (and then sell their "superior" product).

Maybe it's something that's lacking these days, but the art of being an apprentice and truly mastering something is gone. Can you think of any trade where if you peer through a window and watch people work you now can be qualified to do that job? I observe other cultures, specifically Japanese culture, and you see examples where someone will be an apprentice for 30+ years and they still don't think they have mastered something. I think that with this younger generation the need of instant gratification is taking away from the important skill of learning and I felt like the original article embodied that.

On the other hand, I'm all for capitalism. There again this is a shining example of capitalism. The product didn't come off as authentic and they got shut down. I don't think they stole really and trade secrets. Go to Mexico anytime, make an effort to meet some people, spend a bit of time there beyond a weekend and anyone will teach you how to make good tortillas. Why isn't Chipotle being shut down for cultural appropriation? It's really absurd to think that people can only cook the foods of their culture and no one else, and I also think that if these girls worded their original interview better, they would be booming at this point. Who doesn't love burritos?

Re: Article. Stealing their culture? Really? Sheesh. If the ladies made good tortillas who cares how they learned to make them.

If you have a product, and people like it, they'll buy it. I don't think there are any Patents for tortillas.

That exactly my point with the whole capitalism thing. You can make a shitty/good/excellent/poor quality product and people vote with dollars. It's the way things go, and the market dictates who gets what piece of the pie, or tortilla.

I'm Asian. I drive stereotypically Asian. Deal with it. Except I stay out of the left lane.

If going by the logic that slow = asshole then all asians and old people are assholes. And old asians are super assholes.

If all it took was 3 stop signs to push that guy over the edge then I'm not the problem. And he would probably have a really bad time in SF.

The consensus is that I'm an asshole. Even my mom who was with me agrees. I will speed up and use my big burly V8.
