So this is mt bed rack design that I'm going to have my work build, the roof top tent this is made for is the cvt mt thielsen, which is a 90" long tent (7.5ft) hence why this goes over the cab of my truck. The roof rack on top is made out of 5052 aluminum and the rest is 304 Stainless Steel. Feel free to ask questions and or critique this design. The slide out roof rack uses 500lb drawer slides. The slide is designed to only be extended during parked camping.

How do the slides handle vibration, outside weather (ice, silt, mud, etc) and debris in the slides?

I'd think a hinge type would be more resilient and could be loaded when closed.

    That said I'm not a ME ;)

Good question, I am not familiar by what you mean when you say "Hinge Type", however when in the closed position the slides are mostly covered. When extended they will be mostly covered from the top by the roof rack slide out, so that should resist rain. My plan was to liberally apply marine lithium grease to the slides every so often, but perhaps thats not the best idea.

Well all of the drawer slides I've seen in vehicles are inside the cabin of the vehicle, not exposed to the elements. Or they are mounted underneath a toolbox in a truck bed (sometimes under a canopy) where weather exposure is at a minimum. By putting the slides at the top of your truck they will have the most weather and wind forcing dust, debris, and water/ice into them.

If instead you made it a hinge where you opened the aluminum portion by lifting the unhinged side until resting it unfolded in near the same position as you have drawn, you would be losing the mechanical connection of the slide and its issues, but inheriting the issue of supporting the hinged portion (which might be just as hard as cleaning out some sliders every year).

I think I get what your saying as far as the hinge is concerned, my question is how well would that work if you are trying to lift it (above your head, some of us are short....) up when it is loaded. I'll have to ponder this more.

    Little bit of an update:

Wife got laid off about a month ago, so money has been really tight, especially with trying to get ready for summer. Luckily she got an offer for employment today so now I can hemorrhage monies again.

    on that note, bought this:
    IMG_20170328_202356_01.jpg

Am also currently building a swing out for my bumper, the swing out will have a tire carrier and maybe some jerry can or water jug holders, along with a 2 in receiver for accessories, such as a bike carrier, that way my bumpers 2 in receiver is free if I am ever in the need to tow something. Plus I can swing the bikes out of the way to access the bed if it is mounted to the swing out. I have the hinge mechanism done so all that really needs to happen is fab up the swing out frame, hoping I can get this project done by the end of next week.

I will post all the materials used for the swing out hinge and pictures of what it looks like for those who want to modify their bumpers or are doing a homemade one.

After that I will start the bedrack project for my RTT, design is pretty much finalized, just need to buy the material.

And lastly I will be installing some Dakars w/ AAL to accommodate all of this stuff.

Cleaned up and installed a set of Dakars I got from @300AACTaco, I also added the D29XL leaf for extra weight. I have everything bent and ready to be welded for my bed rack (CAD pictured above) and the rear bumper swingout. Unfortunately the welders are tied up at work so idk when they will get a chance to welded, paying work always trumps personal projects... Also have our rooftop tent awaiting the bed rack. Wife is also making a canvas cover for the bed rack made from 600D Cordura

Currently how my truck sits with the Dakars with the AAL and no weight in the rear

hoping that evens out when I add the 300-400lbs of weight in the rear

Got the bed rack tacked all together, couple pieces missing off the top, but will have to wait tilll next week, should have this done and the swing-out on my bumper done by the end of next week. This weekend my wife and I are gonna sew a 600D Cordura cover for it so the bed will be fully enclosed.

They're showing up now at least in the last post you made. Looks awesome! The leaf packs will settle some after some weight for sure

I'm also not experiencing any squeaks (believe you had issues with that), I did however change the front OEM bushings with the the OME ones, wheelers bushing in the rear, maybe that helped.

If it was the polyurethane bushing that you swapped in to help fix the squeak then yeah it probably is what fixed it. My new ones from arb had the polyurethane bushings front and back unlike the way they were before

I just took the rear yellow OME ones that you had and threw them in the front, bought the Wheelers poly bushings and threw them in the rear.
