i wonder if this is why Toyota is holding back; if it's too difficult to meet standards in the US without cheating.

I think everyone will be a target now that VW had to cut a huge check. The smallest impropriety will be thoroughly investigated for a possible payday for someone.

Toyota is not interested in diesel in USA for a ton of reasons..
#1 being toyota owners in general are not requesting them
#2 despite all the diesel fan-bois here, diesel is dead for light trucks. dead dead dead.

there will be a hybrid electric tacoma some day, but never a diesel.

one thing for sure is never a tacoma diesel. the hybrid part I'm pullin
out my ass but it is logically the only new direction toyota would go

Regardless of what you think of this current administration, hopefully it can cut the balls off of the regulatory strength of the EPA.

My Jetta TDI is being bought back by VW shortly. Nearly all manufacturers have pulled thier diesels from the lots. Even the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel which was my first choice for a replacement.

I'm pretty sure it's going to turn out to be the case that almost everyone cheated.

Hybrid F150 is a few years out still. My local dealer told me corporate is saying the current plan is MY2020.

Too bad this all happened really. 80k on my 2015 TDI and she's been flawless. Would love to keep her. But I can't based on the regulatory uncertainty.

I don't understand why Ford, GMC, RAM, VW and Toyota don't stand up to these greedy corrupt assclowns in the EPA and CARB.

Maybe it has something to do with businesses not being as strong as government that controls their industry.

You must be a young whipper-snapper. Why, way back when I was a tad, before that pesky EPA, most days I couldn't see the nearby mountains during the day because the smog was so bad. There were often hot days when there was no recess at school because the air was so smoggy. My mom remembers days in LA when I was little when she literally could not see two blocks, just like in Mexico City, or during the London "Fogs". Just park your nose behind a 1960's muscle car and tell me the EPA rules on emissions haven't helped maybe just a teensy bit. I think you suffer a bit from either bad memory, if you are old enough, or from not realizing the reason the EPA was created to begin with.

The only reason GM has a baby diesel option is because the total price is well within the price of a full size. No way in hell would they offer a small/cheap diesel Colorado that would cut into their precious full size sales.

Toyota is overall a bigger company than GM so they don't really need to aggressively dominate the truck market. Historically Toyota has made really great trucks, but rarely on the cutting edge in terms of technology, efficiency and power. Their infrequent redesigns are proof of that.

Why are we the only country in the entire world that have these super uber emissions? There's a war on diesels going on by a bunch of extremely wealthy people that fly every where spewing emissions directly into the atmosphere. If the Paris accord was supposed to reduce pollution then why didn't they all teleconference? By the way, diesels emitt very little co2.

I don't know all the intricacies of EPA nonsense and all the benefits as well as all the unintended consequences. There's a lot to process. But my opinion is they are too sensitive. You can fix the smog problem without knee jerking and going overboard. In between eco-martyrs and eco-irresponsibility there should be a reasonable place where reasonable people get shit done. From my perspective the EPA costs people quite a bit, with DEF and SCR systems. They take shits constantly, and difficult to maintain, and transport companies are going to factor this in, cost goes up for stuff and things. There was one time back in CA, my catalytic converter took a shit on my 01 Tacoma RIGHT AS CARB was kicking in, which meant a stop sale/no ship on cats that weren't labeled correctly or something, I forget. And I couldn't afford an oem cat set at the time (seemingly my only option) and no way to purchase aftermarket until march. Maybe. When they were apparently going to be re stamped. Which was months away, and my registration was due, which meant a smog, which meant I NEEDED cats in order to drive. I couldn't order any, no place in the US could or would ship to me. So essentially I would had been CARB fucked if it wasn't for some quick thinking.

TLDR EPA is emotional and needs to get fucking real.

There is a great difference between regulation and over-regulation.

It's not the CO2 that they are concerned about. It's the nitrous oxide and soot that are the main problems.

You 100% miss the point like many others. Nobody says pollution control is nonsense. When we regulate to the point of nonsense we all suffer.

They took a diesel Jetta off the road that get 40-50mpg, really smart. Ever read the story how a Hummer H2 is more environmentally friendly throughout its life than a Prius.

The wrong things are driving currently environmental regulations. Surprised so many people are ignorant to simple logic. Follow the money.
