Removed the seat strap and test fit my Kriega tailbag. Ended up having to do the same as the Ninja and just run the straps wrapped around the seat, since there's not really good spots on the subframe to permanently install the loops that go to the bag straps. That, and I don't like the "messy" look of having the loops on there when the bag is not installed since I'm a bit of a neat freak.

Probably won't have the bag on there all the time but I don't mind the look actually.

Still ticking away at the miles. Pretty much just to/from work, with a ride or two on my days off. Life is cutting me no slack recently unfortunately.

First scratch on the bike :annoyed:

Small scratches through the paint on the front wheel lip. No idea how it happened, just happened to see it this morning...

Not even 500 miles...I have heard the FZ wheel paint isn't what you would call durable so oh well.

I'm usually pretty good about cleaning chains every ~300 miles but chain cleaned and waxed at 450. It was pretty dirty.

Oil change coming up at 600 miles, gotta pick up some oil and filter here soon.

Yeah and a filter, I'll pay you back.

I listed 2.85 quarts when I was putting specs in my build references?

Oil filter and crush washer picked up by @fatfurious2 , and Yamalube conventional oil ordered since nowhere around here has 10W40 in conventional.

I'm going to do the 600 mile oil change with conventional then swap to synthetic. I double checked my owner's manual (and the dealer also confirmed this when I called asking if they recommended it also), and the service interval is 600 miles for initial and then the next oil change is at 4000 (and then every 4000). I'm not sure I feel comfortable waiting 3400 miles for another oil change on a brand new motor.

Anyone have any opinions/expertise on this? I'm not doing a hard break in so I would feel more comfortable doing like 600, then 1000, then 4000. I could swear I read somewhere in the manual or something of doing 600 miles of below (sustained) RPM's of 6k, oil change, then 400 more miles of below (sustained) 8k, oil change, then normal service interval after that starting at 4000.

i just do my oil changes at the beginning of the season. Usually I have been doing about 3k per year.

I have 10,700 on my 2014 now. (Purchased December 2013)

I changed mine at 400 and 1,000 miles just in case. Changed with traditional Yamalube at 400 and then synthetic at 1,000 miles. I did it for the same reasoning as you said except I do hard break-in. The oil at both 400 and 1,000 miles was fairly dark enough to warrant being changed in my opinion. It's also common practice among many other people it seems. 07's and 09's have the same intervals. I've done two 4,000 mile interval changes now with synthetic and I could probably get more out of it if I wanted to, but it's worth the piece of mind. Sitting at over 10,000 miles now and all is well.

I think I'll do the conventional for 600 then swap to synthetic at 1000 and start normal interval at 4000.

Can't wait to start ripping more on this thing.

Oil came in yesterday, I'm at 520 miles now so I'll be doing the oil change here pretty soon.

Also received my title and registration from DMV finally. I transferred my old tags from the Ninja over but have ordered new ones now... :spy:

Initial oil change done at 600 miles, Yamalube conventional 10W-40 and Yamaha filter.

Naked bike made it pretty painless, save for the dealer putting the original filter on with too many ooga oogas, but was able to get it with my channel locks since I left my filter wrench at work. Surprisingly not a lot of metal shavings.

Next up is swap over to synthetic at 1000, then starting normal interval at 4000.

Just don't torque your oil drain bolt according to the Yamaha manual. You don't want to have to replace your oil pan like I had to at 438 miles.... :anonymous:

I torque drain bolts to "that feels right"

Used to be more worried about torquing them but now that I do about 5+ oil changes a day at work, I can tell pretty well what feels right
