After 10 years of absolutely no maintenance (other than changing bars and sharpening chains) I finally took my Husky 142 in for a professional tune up. It was starting to bog down under full trigger.

    Sir Scrounge-a-lot strikes again

Bartered some carpentry hours for a few loads of fir rounds that were cut up last year and are already seasoned

My 51 was doing that at one point about 15 years ago or so. Put a new (to me) muffler on it and that fixed it. :notsure:

I bought a cylinder rebuild kit for it about 5 years ago in anticipation of replacing it (since I bought it used nearly 20 years ago and it's worked up a LOT of wood since then) but she keeps going strong. :notsure:

You guys are burning pine, eah? We don't burn pine because it burns hot and creasote build up. I try to get all hard wood and ash. We like ash because you don't have to season it.

    That's a bunch of nonsense.

As long as it's dry it doesn't create any more creosote than hard wood. It burns quicker and therefore hotter because it's not as dense as hard wood.

In some parts of the country hard wood is virtually unavailable. Go up to Alaska and watch them burn fir all winter.

I burn about 1/2 and 1/2 Fir and Madrone

Dry softwoods have never caused me any excess creosote issues

That's good to know. I've just been paranoid about chimney fires.

Shouldn't have any creosote issues then

If your wood is dry you won't have creosote problems with a yearly cleaning.

A split piece of oak will take an easy two years to season.

I like pine for fall/late spring quick fires.

It dries very quick as well.

I amended my original barter for the firewood to include this pile of logs that have been down for quite a while ( pile on right not the cedar logs on left )

Mostly fir witb a few pieces of cedar and cascara

There is some really nice fir in here , this 16" log is over 150 years old

Between this and the stuff I got earlier I have enough wood for this winter and a bit more

Nice. What is the arbutus like when it burns? What does it smell like?

Me, too. May not be needed, but just a few minutes reduces the possibility of a chimney fire.
I also burn a bit hot once in a while letting the heat go up the pipes.

I'm militant about Stihl because I have never had any luck with Husky. It's not that I haven't used Husky before, A) They feel under powered to me and dont seem to rev up as quick as Stihl, B) My uncle has had a couple and they have had issues starting, all of them C) I used to be a faller on a hot shot crew for the forest service and every Husky would have an issue at some point, I always carried a Stihl and in 4 years carrying the same saw not one break down.

Unbelievable machines IMO. With that said, I knew a bunch of pro loggers that lived by Husky. To each their own. Only two companies worth a shit in my book anyhow, when it comes to professional series saws.

I'd throw http://www.jonsered.com/us/ in the mix too. I am a Stihl saw guy but... I know Husqvarna and Jonsered are the same manufacturer, and back in forestry school my roommate would call them Husky-in-red.

I have a jonsered 2050 that was new in 1993? Dad gave it to me. Other than a new carb, and throttle cable, no problems. Great saw.

I don't care for the bar angle on the Jonsereds, though. The Jonsered's have that 90 degree bar angle that just doesn't agree with my cutting position; feels awkward. The Husky's have that 15-20 degree offset (ish) that is much more comfortable for me to use. :notsure:

My little tree saw MS192TC got a great workout over the weekend I helped some friends take down 12 trees in their back yard over the garage and house. The Farmboss MS290 did some ground bucking of logs too.
