I've seen on youtube people using sections of gutter for hydroponics. They're framed in and buckets with net pots protrude into gutter. Potting soil wicks the water.

Or you can do it old school style and have plastic pots full of rockwhool on corrugated sheets at a slant with a rain gutter catch at the end plumbed to you reservoir. Use a pond pump on a timer to push nutrients through drip lines to each pot. Relatively inexpensive.

You will likely want to cut out the center of the lids and wiretie them to the tubs. It will strengthen them so they won't bow out as much when you fill them with water.

You can put a 90 degree elbow at the top of the first bin. It pours down providing a disconnect.

Here's most of my backyard. Nice place to relax and disconnect from the rest of the world after work.

Did all this from scratch when I bought my truck in Oct 2015 and had a vehicle that could haul the supplies to build (with no experience but gave it my best shot). The hedge by the shed was already established.

Ooh yeah. Last weekend I went out of town on a mini getaway and I swear the flowers and veggies seemed to have doubled in size when I got home.

Exploring is good and bad....if one is not diligent about the doggy cleanup duties and pre-scout the path of travel it's a real treat.

I'll admit...dog related activities I supervise and mowing the lawn I get to call out...YOU MISSED A SPOT!....at least twice.

Love the bees, humingbirds, blue Jays etc that are drawn to the flowers and bird bath. I sometimes will just sit and watch for awhile and get lost in my thoughts.

Nice! In fact I'm hesitating on trimming the hedges out front right now....so I can blame you.

The front yard is crap....can't decide what to do with it so it's a 180 of what the back looks like right now. During the CA drought most everything died off. And the city trees drop leaves and pollen like no tomorrow so whatever I decide will eventually look bad if I don't maintain it several times a week. So I decided I'm painting the house and putting blinders on for landscaping this summer.:angrygirl:

We haven't redone the yard since the drought either. I want to have a bunch of stuff including a large retaining wall so it's going to cost.
My wife has her little garden oasis with fountains and bird feeders.

It looks great but we are up in the hills so I gotta keep the traps filled with bird seed.
Around midnight it gets busy. I got 4 in the last two nights.

So I just made a trip to Lowes picked up a few bags of [IMG] And some landscape and garden organic mushroom compost...
I put it on top of a several inch thick layer of wood chips, thats been decomposing for over a yr and half..

Before putting all that down I had put a real thick layer of newspaper over the grass.. Before the wood chips..

I'm not sure how it's gonna go.

I thought of experimenting by planting in the wood chips.. And also digging in dirt below.. Just to see how it goes..

Any thoughts on this endeavor or product I picked up? Input welcome.

I would be careful with planting directly in composted wood chips could be low ph
A little garden lime would help buffer and some nitrogen (chicken shit or blood meal good) would help as sawdust locks nitrogen up as it's composting I think
In any case I'd try to plant in dirt below for sure :)

Poultry has almost 4 times the N by volume as cow
It'll burn plants up if applied too heavily
