just took it out. Pipe gets so small. I understand that toyota wants to lower sound but it just looks so restrictive. I have no difference in sound but, then again I also have a delta 50 exhaust on.

Not really to be honest. But I also changed the filter to a dry, removed the charcoal, installed the lce header, and changed the exhaust. Good performance now.

I removed mine as well. I'm running the LCE header and a cat back and there was a big change from stock. Also my gas mileage went up 2mpg.

So did you do it all at once, or do the snorkel separately to see if it made a difference?

I did it separately. I could hear the air before specially when shutting off the truck like it was sucking through a straw. That sound is now gone which means the air comes in easier. Once I took it out and saw how small the opening gets I couldn't believe it. The rest of that piece is all sealed. Just the tube that decreases diameter is open to allow air in.

How much of a hassle was this thing to get out of the fenderwell? How did you remove it?

It wasn't fun. I knew I should've done a diy. On the picture I took all of the screws with a 10mm socket and push in tabs off with a flat head screw driver. You only need to remove the ones from the back fender (front and back) to 75 percent towards the front. There is a 10mm screw holding the snorkel. After that you can just turn it and work it out.

Just remove the inside wheel liner. If I remember correctly there are a couple of screw that you remove and it comes out. I didn't have to remove the tire to do it. If you follow the link above don't remove the charcoal filter in the air box. There is no performance benefit in doing it

The intake side necks down to about half the size of the opening in the air box. Taking it out let's the truck breath better. The factory installs it to prevent water from getting into the air box if your running through deep water and it also reduces engine noise. Mine has been out for more than a year and I've never had an issue.

Is this snorkel on ALL 2nd gen 4-cyl. models?

This is hard to believe. I have a couple questions, refer to the photo below:
    1) Are you saying that all of the engine intake air passes through the small section circled in green?
    2) Are you saying that the end cap portion circled in red is actually sealed off?

I didn't have one of those in my 2nd gen when I installed the snorkel.

Then someone probably already removed it. My 2nd gen has it.

The green circle is just a tube to change the resonance in the silencer and is not the restriction. The red circle is is the air intake. Compare that size opening to the air exit on the other side of the air muffler. There is a substantial difference in size. Have a look at the first post picture that the OP posted.

Sometimes it also helps to look at it from a level point and in relation to where it's mounted in the truck.

IN other words it makes a semi automatic barrier for water to have to pass upwards again if ingested, if I am ever in mine and have to tear into it
I'll remove it for sure. Just for the heck of it.

I would love a little more "throat" at WOT!

3in leveling kit with strut spacers and add a leaf, bull bar, 2 cube off-road ditch lights, 20in light bar, 4x 6in light bars, painted rear bumper, grill change, new head lights, black out badges, thule roof rack/ amazon roof basket, 17in rims, 245/70R17 AT tires, tri fold bed cover, rubberized undercoating, KYB Gas-A-Just shocks, running boards, new speakers, bluetooth audio, black box MOD.
I just pulled out mine on my 2 Gen 2007 2.7l, not hard, just pulled back the wheel well liner and undid the 2 bolts. I ordered a cold air intake so hopefully this snorkel mod will give the truck even more room to breathe. My only concern is water splashing up into the fender as well as dust. Has anyone who removed the snorkel had trouble with this at all?

I bought the truck new. Highly unlikely anyone removed anything off a brand new truck.
