Whats up guys, got a quick question hoping you guys can help me out with.

Going on a road trip to LA later this month and I am planning on carrying my XD Mod 2 with me in case shit happens.

What are the rules once I cross that state line into CA?

To my understanding, after doing research across the interwebs, all I have to do is:

    1. Ensure I only have 10rd mags with me
    2. Separate the mags from the gun and store them in lockable cases.
    3. Store my lockable gun case out of reach in my storage compartment behind my rear passenger seat.

Wondering if anybody who has actually done it went through anything different?

I don't have a CCW License yet since it's technically not needed to carry in AZ.

    Appreciate the help!

honestly it ain't worth it. from someone who lives in AZ and travels frequently to the Peoples' Republic of Californie

just leave it at home. state of CA is way too strict with their requirements. and this is coming from someone who carries daily

Good news, I just spent 2 weeks in California and had a great time, nice people, great scenery, good food and beer.
    You'll be fine not packing.

Thanks for the response guys! Yeah, I've made my way to CA plenty of times prior to owning a gun and ran into my fair share of road rage warriors thinking they're in Mad Max. Nothing really serious, but want to be prepared in case anybody acts stupid, especially with my family in the truck with me.

Don't do it it's pointless with the ammo in the gun having to be locked away and separated... even if you did need it you wouldn't get to it in time ... plus not worth the hassle just in case you were to get pulled over

Majority of the people that I spoke with pretty much said not to carry and it's not worth it as you guys did. Thanks for the input guys! Gonna rely on machete waving skills and Manny Pacquiao hands if shit hits the fan lol

    bingo

with how California laws are written and enforced, it'll take too long to grab the firearm, mags, and ammo and actually react.

also if you're active duty, it'll cause a few issues there if you get pulled over or have an interaction

    Interesting point.

Don't do anything against the law, while doing something against their laws.

You can call the state troopers and confirm laws with them. I do that when traveling from Texas to any other state. They confirm the laws that I already looked up. Also, you need to check the reciprocal laws when traveling to another state. Texas has a one way reciprocal with California. Meaning California can carry in Texas but I can't carry in California even with my LTC. If you don't have have a CCL/LTC you can get into a lot of trouble (jail time) if that state laws says you need a permit.

Tldr check the laws before going to jail

Honestly, that may be one of the worst pistols to bring here. As crazy as it sounds we have a list of firearms that Cali has aprroved for sale here. Unfortunately we can't legally get one here because it isnt on the list. That makes it illegal. I know you aren't selling it here, just know that if you find out that you can bring a firearm. Make sure it's legal to be here in the first place. A rule set might say you can bring it if all of cali's rules are followed (do not bring a magazine that CAN hold more than 10 rounds to start) but that rule set is probably assuming the gun is a Cali legal gun.

Just something to keep in mind.

I had to buy a pistol case because I was driving through CA for like an hour driving from NV to AZ.

MT stuff, RTT stuff, the usual.
Just because it's unlisted, doesn't make it illegal.

This sounds like one of those things where you should just do what you need to do and dont talk about it publicly. From what youve said, just bringing a XD pistol, youre good legally.

There are a list of banned/regulated firearms that are simply not allowed in CA state lines, any magazine with more than 10 rounds, your .50 BMG, any 'featured' AR15 that is not registered as an assault weapon (its ok to be racist against blacks in CA, rifles). There is great info on www.calguns.net, at the top of the page there are links to flowcharts to determine if your gun is legal. Purchasing of guns are limited to an approved list, though if you already own one its OK to possess. The Steyr M9 is an example of one I want and can possess, but cant buy in CA.

Don't, for the love of all Holy things mention to CHP or local that you have a weapon in the vehicle unless you are specifically asked. If so, make sure you are following their vehicle storage and transport law. I carry my side arm every time I travel into CA because I'd rather have to fidget with gathering up my shit in a parking lot in a locked vehicle in a bad situation (think riots) to defend myself instead of being disarmed and ineffective in self defense. Harsh words suck against raging Reeeee maniacs, but it's funny how fast they run when they actually hear gun fire.

The old addage, judge by twelve instead of carried by six.
