I'm just going by what a professional auto painter told me (zinc chromate). If you go with a self etching primer make sure it's for use with alloys. I do not think the rustoleum can on all the shelves will suffice.

I used zinc chromate when I painted my wheels black and other than some rock rash, they've held up extremely well.

Thanks for the advice man. The stuff I'm I already purchased is Rustoleum but it states that it cane be used on Aluminum.

Here's my progress. I've been undecided on color so Ive only painted one wheel. Stripped old clear with aircraft stripper, degreased, sanded, scotch Brite pad, degreased, 3 coats of self etch primer, 3 base and 3 clear.

This is the only way I know how to photoshop. :)

I'm still not sure about the color. Im putting 265/70r16 Toyo At2 on once I get the wheels figured out. Wheels on the truck now are 15's.

Finished painting them tonight. I going to give these another day of drying and hope to mount the Toyo AT's on Wed.

I'm pretty impressed with the Duplicolor paint. It seems pretty tough. I would have prefer a bit more sheen in the clear, but all I had to choose from was matte and gloss(I chose matte).

I ended up doing 3 coats of etching primer, 2 coats of silver, 3 coats of graphite, and 3 coats of clear. I managed to get by with 1 can of primer, one can of silver, one can of graphite and one can of clear. I have a little bit of each left. I only painted the wheel fronts and center caps. Plenty of paint sprayed through the holes in the front of the wheel that it coated the areas of the wheel that show through the holes. I was wanting to do front and back side of the wheels, but I'm ready to get these things on.

Looks good man! I used that dupli-color graphite on my 4Runner wheels (same truck color as yours ) and i really liked the result. Im probably gonna repeat it for the wheels I have waiting to go on my Tacoma too.

Well, I would love to post a couple pics for you,... But my phone (that has all the pics on it) has been on the fritz for the last couple days. Best I can do at the moment is link my 4runner build thread, don't mind the fact that its really not very up to date life is pretty busy :notsure:

That sounds right. It was a few years ago but IIRC it was at Pikes Peak brewing parking lot

I just spoke with my tire guy and my tires came in. I hope to have pics for you guys this evening. I'm hoping I have some paint left on the wheels after tire mounting. ;) Tire store did say that they would use extra care.... but that was yesterday, LOL.

That looks great. Is that Duplicolor? Looks lighter than graphite but I really like it.

Paint held up excellent during the tire installation. I can't see any signs of wear. :)

I'm pretty tickled with wheels and tires. Here's before and after. Went from265/75r 15 Goodyear Wrangler SRA to 265/70r16 Toyo Open Country AT2 (P rated).

For those just tuning in. This is Duplicolor graphite with Matte clear. Details are earlier in this thread.
