The 4X4 actuation is garbage on these trucks... absolute garbage. My rear locker engages maybe 10% of the time and the 4 lo engages about 50% of the time. Meanwhile I have to listen to that god damn beeping sound in the cab. Mine doesn't really lurch into 4X4, but it makes a clunk sound when it engages, assuming it actually does. This is my biggest complaint about my truck.

There should be a bit of noise/quiet clunk for when the connections have been made or disengaged, but usually nothing drastic. A key for truck health is to engage the 4x4 drivetrian on suitable roads every once and a while to keep everything all lubed up. I live in the canadian snow belt so my 4x4 drivetrian gets used a lot in winter and still a fair amount in the summer on bush roads. So far it at 54,000km it all engages smooth and properly everytime its needed

Going into 4H, like others have mentioned, I coast in neutral (Im a MT) at 10km ish, put it into 4H. If your applying any gas at all or have it in drive in an auto, then you might hear a louder noise as its harder for everything to line up properly. If 4L is needed, come to a complete stop then engage. Even when going from 4H to 2wd, if you can, back up 10ft or so to ensure the drivetrian has been disconnected. Just because the light went out may not mean that everything has been decoupled.

I use to have an atv that the hubs would remain engaged unless you reversed

have you checked oil in differentials. Level & condition of it? Metal chunks in it?

i used to feather the throttle, but it didnt always work great. Someone mentioned on one thread here he goes into neutral while moving which i though was counter intuitive. Damnit, it works great, no thud.

No problem, the symptoms of my binding was a "hopping" or "jumping" feeling as one tire would have to lose traction and spin faster than the other when in 4wd so thought it might be something to look into.
