There's many knowledgeable, helpful people here who could give you great advice about many many things. Advice about whether you should buy a truck....that is really something only you can know for sure.
Test drive as much as the dealership will let you, and also test the GM twins and Frontier. Test some full size also, then decide what you like best.

I love my 3rd Gen, but I'd probably keep that 2015. The OR is superior to the SR5 (which is a fine truck, by the way). I keep vehicles for a long time though.

 

I had a 2016 TRD which was nice but yes, there were some minor transmission issues. Truck was written off in an accident and I have since replaced it with a TRD PRO.

LOVE IT! the 2017 is a totally different truck. No issues to date.

 

Have two 3rd gen sr5's, we love them both. Tacomas get shit done.

At least Toyota wants to admit to a problem --how long did the GM thing with the key/ignition problem go on while KILLING people.
As for buying any vehicle -- only you can know what you "should" do. it all depends on affordability, needs and lastly wants.
BTW your color choices are great --same two I was deciding between. I went with the blue because I thought I would not get tired of it as soon as I would with the quicksand. If you plan on keeping it only a few years --then this reason would not matter. I keep my trucks a long time (last one F150 for 15 yrs.)

OP, as you asked our opinion on what you should do, and taking into consideration that we are all good friends here, my advise is to be the square peg in the round hole of TacomaWorld and get a Bugatti instead.

 

Also, speaking of insurance costs -- you may want to wait till Toyota offers all the safety stuff --that time is coming very soon for the tacomas. When we went from our 08 CRV to our 15 Subaru Outback -- our insurance actually went down --just because we got the OB with the "eyesight" system on it!

 

Love my 17' DCSB OR, don't regret buying at all.
