Why Toyota so boring now?

Comin in kinda late on this one. (Why the good threads always get posted when I'm out and about being busy? )

It's already been said, but I'll repeat it because it needs to be hammered in there for folks who don't get it.

Toyota marches to the beat of their own drum. They are no paper stat warriors and never will be.

Any M-series BMW is a monster in it's own right. But if everybody made an M3 for that market...THAT would be boring. An RC F offers a complimentary option that gives the best riding, best DD'ing option in the range. When it comes down to it, it may not be the best on paper, it may not be the fastest lap time, but it's going to last forever in a half, still being way faster than you need it and being 1000x more comfortable than any M or AMG, whatever.

Boring? Maybe. But I'd take a GS F over an M5 because good lord the cost of maintaining any M car is just too much. Not to mention...it just LOOKS better.

Dude the RC F is pretty cool but I do admit it might be tough to choose that over an M2/4. Main reason being the 6MT tho

What I wouldn't give to have that boring ass, boxy, uninspired design vehicle in the garage right now!

And personally, MPG is about the last thing I'm going to worry about when purchasing a purpose oriented vehicle (in this case off road capable vehicle that can double as a daily driver). A 5mpg difference will run what, $350 to $400 a year in gas at 10k miles a year? It just comes with the territory.

I'm sure the Colorado diesel does a bit better mileage wise. But at what premium on price? And no way I trust a chevy to handle the abuse I've heaped on my Toyotas over the years. Everything is a trade off. If I want something that looks offroad ready for my next visit to the mall and won't have an F150 ecoboost blowing my doors off but that I don't need to rely on being able to handle off road abuses, I'd consider another option. Until then, it's Toyota.

However, I paid $36k for such a wussy engine. I thought 278hp would be adequate, but it's not. I have MT, and it just feels like an accord or Cammy when I get on it. It struggles uphill, and if i slightly depress the accelerator, my MPG shoots down to 7mpg or lower. It's so stressful to drive anywhere because I have really restrain myself for efficiency.

The Ford ecoboost v6 has a similar mpg rating and it's putting out way more power. I have filled up four times since purchasing this truck, every average tank had a 14-15mpg rating. If I was getting 400+ HP, I wouldn't give a damn. But 14-15mpg averages in a sub 300hp auto? I am seriously scratching my head here.

It's the same story with everything that Toyota is putting out. The FRS is seriously under powered. I am surprised anyone would buy that when the domestics are putting out way better cars (in terms of performance) at a similar price point. The GM midsize twins, while looking uglier, look like way better bargains on paper.

It's the same with all of toyota's other "performance" cars including the garbage LFA. I mean who the hell would buy that over an M2 or M4?

I can't believe this is the same company that put out legendary cars like the AE86, MR2 mk2 and Supra. I get that those cars were commercial failures.

I am definitely going to the Ford and Chevy dealerships this weekend. I always stayed away from American cars because of the 80-90s reliability issues. Those issues are gone now. You're getting way more value for your dollar with domestics as compared to Japanese or German cars.

Man. I had a 4cyl MT 2nd gen for 10 years, and that felt nice on the road. Sure it didn't have a lot of power, but I never felt it struggled on hills.
And I didn't feel strssed out driving it.

I can write from experience, having just traded one in, but the GM twins with the 3.6 definitely have the power and efficiency edge over this 3.5. I regularly got 24mpg doing 75 on trips, and 18.5 around town, and that mother would haul ass when floored! But other than that and the sweet ride, I had sever quality control issues, and it didn't feel like it would last forever like a Toyota. That is why I'm back and smiling.

I don't understand why you are so stressed about efficiency. You just paid 36k for a truck why are you stressing over a 40 dollar tank of gas that should last 1-2 weeks?

Haven't toyotas always been boring? Toyota makes cars for the masses which means boring cars. Sure, they'll make a Supra every now and then but more years than not, they don't even have a real sports car. Let's not confuse Toyota with Ferrari. Hell, let's not confuse Toyota with BMW or even Ford for that matter. At least Ford makes the Raptor and some serious Mustangs and the GT.

I expected that with mine too. TRDOR, auto and I never saw better than 18, but I usually got 13-15. It was still a nice truck, but it wound up being a little too small to carry both my hunting dogs and gear for the week long hunting excursions I take. Thought I could make it work, but not without a trailer. And the cranky tranny pissed me off.

Ironically my new 2016 Silverado LTZ with a 6.2l gets better gas mileage than the Taco. And that's with a ARE mid-rise topper. At 11,000 miles I'm averaging 23hwy and 17.5 city.

Of course that's if I don't womp on the gas, and that's hard NOT to do cause that 6.2 is frekin' sweet.

Exactly. That is the only reason I would get rid of the taco...if it gets to be too small for my needs. I will then get a tundra.
