For overlanding I would go with the tundra. The mileage once you put gear on there really isn't much different if not better with the tundra.

Good to hear. Maybe I should go down to 33's or wait for 5:29 gears to come out.

To be honest...I wouldn't be afraid of 5:29's with that 6 speed trans/3.5L set up Toyota decided to go with...mind you I had a supercharger on my tundra prior so anything I drive now seems like a toad!! But, for an overland set up I gotta say I'm pretty happy with how it does on and off road...lots of people are not happy with how this new one is performing, and I agree with some of it but proper gearing overcomes much of the critics complaints at a pretty good value.

Yeah and I take that into acccount as we have one too. Which is not even close in power comparison.

Oh good catch. I didn't see you were running 35's. And yep, I'm running a 33ish tire. Maybe one day 35's. I'm heading to Moab for about a week coming up and install after that. So maybe three weeks I'll have an update too.

I'm new to this auto thing. I've regeared quite a few manuals in my life (one had 200 something to one low range that was nice). Even if it's a small change I'll be happy.

I have TRD Sport...so I changed carriers also (ARB Air Lockers both F&R)...I believe regearing with an existing locker would not change anything for you but that would be a question I'd ask Nitro or whoever you decide to go with.

Yes everything still works fine. It's a mechanical change to the system not a electrical.

I'm looking to do the same thing to my Sport, it's a manual, but i have no clue what I should be buying besides the compressor. Can you give me some insight on what lockers work with the 8.75" manual rear end/front end.

I have the auto so my suggestion would be to call Nitro Gear and Axle and speak to them...they're total pros and can answer your questions better than I could.

    Funny..
I just got back from Sedona also. Sedona all the way to Socal today. Avg total trip was 14.2 mpg. Im on 285s, Kings suspension, topper, prinsu roof rack, and a good amount of camping weight in the back. My best was 16.8, low was 12ish also. it was mainly in 4th and 5th gear. Sometimes touched 3rd gear while getting to Flagstaff.

noo, sorry, with the stock gearing. Must've missed the post where he already got the 4.88's on already.

Phew! One more post like that from someone with 4.88's I'll bury my gear set and cry myself to sleep.

So similar to me? My 16-17 was the down hill section at cajon. I got as bad as 10 in the hills. I'm sure the roof top tent is a little more wind resistance though.

Yup. IMO it's a car engine. Something that would be right at home in a Avalon not pushing that much weight or needing torq to get up hills. It's obvious toyota did what they had to do to meet the Cafe standards a 6 speed trans behind that and on flat ground and paper I'm sure it gets record MPG for a Toyota.

Hey man, reviving an old thread here... but thought I'd ask someone for a long term 4.88 gear update. How do you like the truck now? I've only got 285/70/17s on my truck and they are enough to make me consider trading out every highway trip. Truck absolutely cannot hold a gear unless it's fourth above 65-70. Really like the truck, just wish it wasn't a miserable mess to drive on the highway lol
