You're going to get $15 worth of security from that. If I smash and grab, i'm taking it and figuring out the lock later. Unless you can secure it down, it's likely to get stolen.

This statement is part of the problem with "assault rifle" type guns. The mass public thinks they are being purchased and owned simply for street shootouts and attacks on civilians. While not the prevalant reason for buying them, they great varmint guns. Coyotes, rabbits, raccoons, etc. Also, they're just fun to shoot. It's actually a low powered rifle compared to most other guns. It's basically a blend of a hunting rifle and a pistol. Nobody loses their shit when people talk about shooting a deer with a .308.

People are scared of the gun because of how they look, not how they shoot. There's a shitload of guns that are more dangerous than AR-15s, these just happen to be in the spotlight because of a couple tragic events.

    Anyway, back on topic.

Does anybody store anything under or behind their back seats? I saw a picture of a shotgun a while back, but haven't seen much lately. Is there a way to lock the back seat compartment if you do store something in there?

I leave a handgun in the truck. It is not visible. If someone is going to break into my truck they can have it and insurance can pay for it. I am not going to fuck with unlocking and locking a box every time I get in and out of my truck. Keep the serial number handy and report if it's stolen.

Damn y'all. Everybody on edge this morning? OP asked for a suggestion. I posted a cheap, discreet option to lock, hide, and secure a pistol and wallet in the event someone chooses to leave those things in the truck.

keyed box + steel cable secured to driver's seat frame. Slides under and out with ease. Invisible from the window. Convenient and discreet, supposing your pants size is <40" and you have a minimal amount of flexibility. Unfortunately, you might have to remove your eyes from the horizon and potential threats, which is a no go for some who are paranoid AF if their shooter isn't chambered and within reach at all times.

If somebody wants something bad enough, they'll get it.

I've been researching riffle storage for months now. Rackbone makes a nice behind the seat riffle holder I've been looking at. Also, Du-Ha makes a storage tote for riffles that attaches to the bed of the truck. Good if you have a lockable cover. They only make underseat and side bed storage for Tundras right now. I have a console vault for my handgun. Going to keep researching for the riffle.

What's the point in carrying a gun in your truck if it is for self defense and having it unloaded and/or not in reach? Not on edge at all just always asking the question and I am skeptical by nature.

I just don't understand this line of thinking? You're biggest worry about having your gun stolen by some meth head is getting your money back???

My line of thinking is I don't really give a fuck. Yeah shit gets broken into and stolen. I don't give a fuck to the point that I wouldn't hand one out to a guy on the sidewalk or leave it on my dash visible but also not going to lock and unlock a stupid box to have my gun available. Not every Damn time I get into and out of my vehicle.

I think the point is if your in the truck it's out and if your not it is locked and secure from someone who shouldn't have access. This could be a break in or kids digging around looking for something. I just think that is responsible gun ownership.

The thing is this: The fear of a stolen firearm is irrational. The way I can prove that is to replace the word firearm with some other object. Let's say a hammer. My truck's toolbox stays unlocked and a meth head could easily take a hammer from it and kill someone and no one would care. The police wouldn't track who's hammer it is, try to figure out if it was purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot, no threads on TW asking where to hide them, etc. and no one would be on the news trying to ban hammers or restrict their sales. It's an inanimate object that in no way is responsible for the crime And neither is its owner.

I SHOULD be able to leave a gun on a rack in my back glass, doors unlocked, and no one should mess with them because they're mine. Now, I'm not naive so I don't do this, they go out of sight and the doors get locked BUT, just like the hammer, the gun or its owner shouldn't be held responsible for crimes committed with it if it's stolen. And just like anything else stolen, yes, I'm concerned with getting its value returned to me. After all, I'm REQUIRED to have insurance, so by damn, I'm using it.

I'm not in any way saying that owners of stolen guns should be held responsible any more than if someone stole your truck and ran somebody over with it. I'm just saying it's irresponsible to not take simple and inexpensive measures to ensure your gun doesn't end up on the street. If one of my guns was stolen the very last thing on my mind would be the few hundred dollars it cost to replace it. Every time a citizen or police officer was shot in my city I'd wonder if the Critical Defense rounds came out of MY gun.

If I am traveling and feel I might need it within a moment's notice, it is within reach. If I am simply headed home, to the farm, or to the range, it will be secured.

I grew up seeing rifle racks in the rear windshield of many pickup trucks. Usually deer rifles or a lever action Henry. Very convenient for taking down a coyote trying to poach one of your calves.

You see this less in Texas now. Mainly due to thieves. Really depends on where you live.

Or at least get a safe tethered under the seat. Thieves may not look under and you may get it back if your recover your vehicle. I feel that if they see a console safe, they WILL break into it.
