    Working towards an overland build
As of June 1, 2017, this build thread is very much still in progress.

I decided to stop lurking and finally join TW once and for all. Forgive the noob mistakes to follow, first venture into forumming.

This is my Tacoma. A 2010 DCSB TRD offroad. My best friend's wife took one look, named him Magnus (which has stuck), and promptly ordered me a pair of truck nuts on Amazon (which haven't). They're from Berkeley (although so am I) where this looks like a big truck. In Texas its basically a Prius I think, although I live in Austin, so now I'm confused.

Anyway, getting going on an overland build here.

    Background.

Purchased 3 years ago with 37k on the clock. Already installed were 2" Radflo coilovers up front with Light Racing UCA's to level it out and billy 5100's in the rear with the stock leaf springs. I've spent most of my time (money) on ripping out that suspension and rebuilding it all so that it can actually handle some weight. The ARB bumper, skids, sliders, and snorkel were also installed, but everything else I've done in my garage. Except welding on the limit strap clevis mounts. Gotta learn how to weld.

    Whats been done:

    Suspension
    • Radflo 2.5" remote resi front, 650lb Eibach coils (OE replacement)
    • Radflo 2.5" remote resi rear (OE replacement)
    • Dakars
    • All Pro u-bolt flip kit
    • Timbren bump stops rear
    • Wheelers bumpstops front
    • Total Chaos UCAs
    • Total Chaos LCAs (86500)
    • Trail Gear limit straps up front
    • BAMF HD rear shackles and hangers
    Armor
    • ARB deluxe front bumper
    • Bud Built skids
    • Rock sliders from who knows where (bolt on)
    • BozTec rear diff skid
    Recovery
    • Warn 9.5 XP, steel cable (converted to contactor)
    • 5x 3 gal Rotopax
    • TJM TRED ramps
    • Tow straps and d-rings and all that
    • (add: recovery points)
    Electrical
    • IBS Dual battery system
    • LightForce 170 Strikeforce Halogens
    • Cheap-ass Amazon LED bars

    Tires/Wheels
    • SCS F5 16" 3.5" BS, matte gunmetal (not pictured)
    • Mickey Thomson Baja MTZ 285/75 R16's
    Body
    • Bushwacker fender flares (actually bolted on tho)

    Other
    • Stainless braided extended brake lines front and rear
    • Drive shaft shim kit
    • Tacoma Safari Snorkel
    • Thule rack/cross bars
    • Home made rack/basket in the Thules
    • Home made aluminum bed cover
    • ARB 2.5 m awning

    To do:

    • CBI rear bumper with tire/gas can carrier
    • Maybe a camper shell
    • Maybe Prinsu racks on the cab and on the maybe camper shell
    • ARB locker up front
    • FJ transfer case
    • 700 lb springs up front (have them, need to install)
    • Breathers for all the stuff that needs to breath (have the ARB kits, need to install)
    • Learn to weld

Nice looking truck... ARB bumpers always give such an overland/safari vibe. Looks like you took the pictures on the surface of mars btw.

Thanks man, you've got a couple of nice look builds going yourself!

I have 5 of the 3 gallon rotopax, so 12.5 extra gallons (in my experience with these things if you fill them all the way up they leak all over the place when they heat up). How many I actually fill depends on where im going, but with those tires and all the extra weight I have a range of 250 miles at best. I got into the habit of filling all 5 when I was working in some pretty remote places in Baja, and if I don't really have a plan I'll fill them all up to maximize range. But to be perfectly honest I apparently haven't been trying hard enough to get lost since I've never actually needed the extra gas. The only time I've run out of gas was in west Texas on 10 somewhere before I had the cans. Engine died as I was rolling up an onramp, coasted through a couple stop signs and up to the pump.

Nice, and thanks brother! I have a 3.5 myself, but have yet to use it. From your experience, if you don't fill them past the "safe fill line" you should be good to go as far as leaks right? When it comes to fuel, better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it! Sub'd for the shenanigans/build progress!
