Pulling out a tree stump?

You should be able to pull it out. Good info above. I use to do this stuff regularly. Always the heaviest rates strap, never a chain. They both can break, what do you want hitting your ride? Wrap the strap looped around close to the base of the stump, then wrap it on your frame start tight go slow. Need 2 people, one observing for safety from a distance.

But I have a stump and a hilift. Are you using the highlift as a wench (perpendicular) or do you wrap the stump and jack it straight up?

I've done fence posts before. How I did them was to wrap a strap around the lowest part accessible and stand the jack straight up. You may even use it reversed (jack handle towards the stump) angled away from the base. My best advice is to dig a hole around the stump with a shovel. Then use a sawzall with a 14" pruning blade to cut any roots you come in contact with. Afterwards I would soak the area for a few hours to soften the soil. Set a 2x6 base beside the stump next day and give her a go. You won't pull the whole thing out, but rather loosen the soil around it. Once loose attach your strap to the lowest point of the stump and slowly give it some gas. Having someone watching is a very good idea. Or the backup camera anytime mod. Be sure to throw a blanket or something on the strap to prevent it from flying at you/truck incase it snaps. Good luck and take some vids.

I'd much rather use my highlift then one of my trucks. Seems much more "controllable".

So plan is to wet the ground. Use an axe/pick axe to cut as many roots as I can. Then wrap it with a chain/strap and jack it out. If that doesn't work I'll use my '85 to tug on it a little.

Edit: stump is 4" at the most. Small tree died in my front lawn area.

You can also use a full size back hoe!But,minis rent for less then 100$for half a day,you can tow it with the Tacoma,start a new thread on worried about tow capacity,get another started for brake controllers,the trailer plug connector doesn't work,and re-arrange the flower bed at the same time!

The most amusing part of this thread is that every video uploaded of an idiot yanking on a stump was driving a Chevy pickup...

Had to cut all the roots with a sawzall but the truck definitely helped. My wife was taking the video... don't think it's worth a damn.

 

Well I guess that is over. What to do rest weekend. Some how I feel cheated.

 

Go look for an even bigger stump, pull it out, upload video. But make sure you borrow someone's '94 Chevy Pickup, use a harbor freight tow strap, give yourself 30' of slack, punch it and upload results.
