2000 v6 auto trans replacement

I'm trying to replace the trans. in my 2000 Tacoma (V6 4wd Federal emissions SR5 extended cab). I've gotten 2 wrecking yard trannys and both have had different valve bodies than the trans that came out of the truck. I've done some forum searching at it seems that there was a valve body change mid 1999 from the 2 tube valve body to a larger and supposedly 'upgraded' valve body. I can't seem to find a 2000 or late production 1999 trans. in town so I'm wondering if the 1998 / early 1999 trans. will work or if I need to keep searching for a late 1999 / 2000 trans. I've included some pics of each below. Thanks!

So I've looked over most of that thread ( although it is quite extensive) and I still dont see an answer to my question. I don't see year by year interchangability answers or anything specific to ~ 2000 model year valve bodies vs. previous years. If you can point me to a specific link within that thread or have a helpful comment, great. Thanks.

 

Why is the wrecking yard selling you transmissions that will not work for your application ?
With this said , the wrecking yards know more about what years will fit and what years will not fit
They have the programming and applications that can figure out what transmission will work for you .
Did they say you would have to change out any wiring ?
Did you identify your transmission using the links I have posted in the write up ?
That would be the first place to begin
*A340F are found in 4wd 4runners and trucks that have the 2.4L 22RE 4cyl motors.
*A340H are found in 4wd 4runners and trucks that have the 3.0L 3VZ-E< V6 motors.
*A340E are found in 2wd 4runners and trucks that have the 3.0L 3VZ-E V6 motors.
prerunner 2.7 use an a340e. A340f for a 4wd
All of these(except the 2wd versions) have an integrated chain driven transfer case that gives a 2.56:1 gear reduction in 4lo.

Well I'm not saying the wrecking yard intentionally gave me the wrong trans, but they may not be aware of subtle year by year changes given the same base trans case type. I'm a Honda tech and say an s80 trans comes in quite a variety of variations and applications. I'm just not familiar with Toyotas in terms of what is interchangeable. The tag on the side of each trans case was 30-40le. It seems that this is an Aisin desifnation for the a340e, but possibly the a340f as well. The 2000 Tacoma 3.4l 4wd seems to come up with both, and I'm not sure if / how they are even different.

The other issue is that both the wrecking yard trannys I got only had 1 tube to the valve body, whereas the pictures I've found have 2. It seems unlikely that I got 2 trannys missing the same tube but anything is possible I suppose.

Again, im just not familiar with the interchangability with the Tacomas. I don't want to stab a trans in this thing that has a dif valve body and run into a shift issue, software difference in the pcm, etc.

Availability of used trannys is also an issue as I've had 2 get them shipped in from another city and I couldn't get a look at them prior to shipping.

Another potential solution is swapping the valve body over, but I would need to rebuild it and I was trying to avoid that to an extent.

I believe what you have is a model run change to the valve body .
With this said , they are both 3 solenoid transmissions . As long as the electrical connections are the same and throttle control is the same , you are good to go .
Electronic models use the throttle position sensor to tell the transmission how much load is placed on the transmission and mechanical models such as the A340F use a cable from the carb down to the transmission .
I would have to dig through my ATSG books to find out why Aisn Warner made the change to the twin maneuver pipes but I believe the change was made to the casing as the following years used an electronic governor .

 

They both had 3 solenoids in the valve body but the placement was different and the subharness through the case was different. I believe the plug on the outside was the same though. The 2000 had a physically larger valve body. Both of the wrecking yard trannys (1998 and 1999 model years) had only 1 pipe from the valve body to the case. All the pics I've seen seem to have 2. All 3 trannys had a kick down cable that runs to the throttle body. From what I read, they went to an electronic kick down in 2001 governed by the PCM.

 

Sorry... the 2 tube valve body pic that I posted was something I found online. Both of the wrecking yard trannys I got only had 1 pipe but I didn't get a pic of them before I returned them. The trans filter holes to the valve body were different as well. The pic of the tags on top I took though. Any thoughts on whether or not they indicate a change in the trans?

 

I looked through my garage cupboards to see if I still have my import valve body book from 1999 but I cant find it . The book tells you how the identification tag was broken down to identify the transmission in your truck .

I ended up finding a trans from a 2000 after calling 15+ wrecking yards in town and got the truck going. Still not sure on the compatibility between valve bodies. The 2000 trans I picked up had the larger valve body and the same 3D750 sticker on top.
