Just did a little reading on 4600 vs 5100s on the Google machine and read 6 different forums (non Toyota) and damn near every post read along the lines of "I like the 4600 better, 5100s are too soft, Bilstein recommended 4600 for towing unless lifted."

And these are on real trucks, 3/4 and 1 tons.

What do ya know.. It's almost like they're 6 in one and half a dozen in the other. Who'd have guessed!

5100s are a much better shock than the stock one... I had them on my 2005 Tacoma after one of the stock ones failed, as they did on my 2010. The 5100 is a far bigger shock so they are not the same at all. Yet, it is just the next level up from stock, so it is cheap and not at all over-doing it. I am not racing the Baja 500 with my trucks, I only want control and ride improvement. For the small difference in price, replace the stocks with 5100s in the back... a no-brainer!

I originally though the "trd" bilsteins where 4600 HD's but they are not so your OEM one are not 4600's.

and yes the 5100's are bigger than the OEM but not the 4600's

I have photographic proof of that attached. small dirty one is OEM toyota bilstein, clean one is new 4600

And as the previous poster mentioned, internally the 5100 and 4600's are the same , both have 46mm piston but 5100 have longer shaft to accomodate lifted trucks..

so as mentioned, if not lifted 4600's, if lifted 5100'

    from bilstein , 5100 and 4600 dimensions

and some one can correct me if i am wrong but i do not think "and i said think, not know for sure" airbag counts as lifted since nothing in the suspension has changed, axle mounting points are the same , just like adding a stiffer spring doesn't lift the truck.

    Excellent post.

I wonder if there's even a difference between the 4600 and rear 5100 shocks?

in defence of the 5100 series it does mention the following.

"Many customers do prefer the 5100 Series even on stock trucks because the shortest 5100s are typically built for 0 to 2 inches of suspension lift, meaning they can run the 5100 on their stock height truck but leave the option open for a lift later on down the road."

mine will never be lifted and the 4600's are slightly cheaper
